Hi folks,

I am real interested in teaching English in South America for some time. I have not yet earned any certification, but I have been volunteering with a local organization.

My question is; normally when you get a job in South America are lesson plans normally all setup or would I be coming up with my own lesson plans?

I have been coming up with my own lessons at the place I have been volunteering at, and it is not easy! I have no problem implementing them and engaging the students, but I just dont feel very confident coming up with lesson plans.

Thanks!

Do a CELTA, you will be very comfortable coming up with your own lesson plans. I doubt anywhere you work anywhere in the world would ever give you lesson plans. You are a teacher, you come up with the lesson.

In Mexico, at least, there are a couple of chain schools that do give you lesson plans, more like scripts that you read, really. And lots of schools give you text books with teachers manuals. All you have to do with those is read over them, and maybe adapt them a little to your specific situation. If the school doesnt supply books, and lets you use what you want, you can always get teachers manuals on your own. In addition, there are LOADS of ready made lesson plans on the Internet, many of them quite good. Why reinvent the wheel? There are only so many ways to teach the verb to be.

Depends on the school Some places expect you to follow the book, others have no books and expect you to invent everything.

Thanks for the help guys!

So I should pretty much just get used to the idea of making my own lessons with the help of some textbooks?

Um, have a few fillers up your sleeve and then see what books the school has. They might have bookshelves upon bookshelves of books, so you can make a hodge podge lesson plan. That's what I did for my one convo class. I have 7 different sources that I glean info from.
