|
|
I want to buy some books in English for leisure reading. How can I go about doing that?
I think I once heard amazon.com was an option. How much extra would one pay in shipping and handling for that?
Could I order through a book store here? If so, which ones would you recommend? How much more do you think I will be paying if I go that route?
Thanks for the tips! |

I'm interested in this too, as I'll be needing textbooks pretty soon, and would like to order them through a shop here to avoid any shipping hassles. |

I do have specific books in mind. I am 100% sure I cannot find them anywhere.
I am particularly looking for any book written by Dan Savage. That's the most important book on my list of books. |

I've been using ebay for all my book purchases. Never had trouble getting them shipped here. |

I buy books on eBay, Amazon and BetterWorld, and occasionally AbeBooks. No problem so far; never a shipment lost (yet)(fingers crossed).
Here are some tips for not paying more on shipping than you have to:
eBay: check the website of the national postal service for the country you're buying from (http://www.usps.com/all/ in the case of the U.S.) to see what a fair shipping price is. Some sellers charge a fair price, and others charge much more than cost.
If you find a book you want, check the rest of the seller's store to see if they have further books you might like to get at the same time, because you can really save buying several books at once. Some 2025 or so small paperbacks or 810 medium-sized hardcovers or trade paperbacks can fit into a Small Flat Rate Box for $23.95.
Amazon: Shipping prices for Amazon used books are much higher than for new books, so the price spread between used and new has to be quite broad before it's worthwhile choosing used over new. Check shipping prices before making a decision. You will find the prices for shipping new books and used books ("Amazon Marketplace") on the amazon.com site.
BetterWorld: Best shipping deal by far. $3.97 U.S. per book to Mexico. |

That is a good deal. Least I've paid is about 7 US. How long does it take to arrive? Mine come down in between 5 and 30 days from ebay, though some sellers are as far off as Australia. |

About a month or a bit more; 36 weeks. My latest transaction was: ordered Oct. 17, shipped Oct. 22, arrived Dec. 2. In general, I've experienced the same spread of 530 days from eBay as you, buying from U.S., Australia & UK.
The only shipping deal cheaper than BetterWorld is if you can score a large lot of small paperbacks from a single eBay seller in a Small Flat Rate Boxand the stars have to be in the right place for that to happen. |

I was in the El Tomo Suelto used bookstore today and the manager there, seeing my interest in buying books in English, told me that they are starting to sell a large English-language collection of novels by British authors. Old, not-so-old, variety of formats (paperback, hardcover, various editions, even some firsts and folios (segn)). Some of the books may be on the shelf by this weekend, for sure by next week, according to what he said.
Most of the books are going to their Coyoacan store at M.A. de Quevedo 673, but some are going to the downtown store at Donceles 42. |
