| The school (not eikawa) I I have a job offer from has offered a 'bonus' determined by my 'contribution to the school'. I'm not really concerned since the overall package is adequate, but I am curious abut what it might entail, and the kind of ballpark figures we are talking about. Anybody have any experience in this regard? Any hints on how to maximize the potetial bonus? |

Japanese salaries usually include the bonus contribution. Having yours as separate and tied to performance may be a way for them to get out of paying you the amount someone somewhere at the pinnacle of education has deemed you "should" get.
What I would ask for up front are details of what performance criteria this bonus is linked to and I would not be happy unless they were forthcoming.
Not only could the bonus be subject to wild fluctuations depending on what vague criteria they are assessing your performance by, but the size of your bonus may be known at the school. IOW, you might find that the bonus indicates teacher value and the pros and cons of that whole kettle of fish.
You might therefore find yourself "coerced" into "contributing to the school" simply to earn a good rating with the administration, money notwithstanding.
Sounds like a stick to beat the staff with to me... forget the carrot...  |

Why ask us? Ask your employer. It could be a paltry 10,000 yen or 3 times a month's salary.

Nope. My high school offers a bonus with no strings attached. Every time I hear of someone in your position with such a flimsy description of the reasons a bonus will/won't be given, it usually means you won't get it because they will find some paltry excuse to give it to you. As shｍooj wrote, find out EXACTLY what the criteria are and how they intend to measure them.

Just a stupidly simple one. Follow whatever criteria they describe to the letter, and don't rock the boat in any way whatsoever during your employment. That goes without saying in order to "maximize" your chances. Whether doing this goes against anything you may feel is up to you. |
