Not related to teaching but since it's almost upon us and it's a part of the Mexican culture I figured what harm could be done.

Quote:
Due to occurring shortly after Halloween, the Day of the Dead is sometimes thought to be a similar holiday, although the two actually have little in common.

Shocked

Quote:
Similar observances occur elsewhere in Europe and in the Philippines, and similarly themed celebrations appear in many Asian and African cultures.

Confused

let us not forget the most basic understanding of the day of the dead (or whatever you want to call it), which just so happens to be simultaneously celebrated by humans all over the world (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_winter_festivals): it is the "death" of the sun, or the Winter Solstice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Solistice)

have you noticed the days becoming shorter? the nights longer? colder? the leaves turning? the plants dying? (of course the changes are less marked closer to the equator, but the observant, ancient astronomers of the Americas were well aware of this phenomenon: the tilting of the earth's axis, apparent trajectory of the sun) the darkness is coming... and the sun appears to be dying... (i'm in Boise, Idaho; and i can assure you this is happening, my tropical friends).

but fear not, for in the Spring, the sun shall RISE AGAIN! (and folks all over the world will celebrate life, call it easter if you want).

you see, Jesus died, and nothing catastrophic happened.

But if the sun dies, imagine a cold, dark, dead world.

which is kinda what happens during the winter. thus, as the solstice approaches, and the sun dies, we celebrate it, all over the world, perhaps in slightly different ways, but all for the same reason, you can be sure of that.

that anyone can leave this out of any kinda serious discussion of the "origins" of the day of the dead is... Shocked shocking.
