Hello everyone. I've learned a lot in these forums over the last year and thought some people might have insights for me. My wife and I are trying to plan out our lives and frankly I'm overwhelmed by information overload.

What's the deal with Spousal visas?

According to http://www.whosetravel.com/visa_documentation.htm -
Quote:
(visa requirement for) Foreign Spouse joining an ARC holder:
* A certificate of marriage issued by the applicant's government authenticated by an ROC Embassy, Consulate or Mission with jurisdiction over the place of issuance.
* A health certificate.
* A photocopy of the principal alien's ARC.

Accurate?

Taiwanese Immigration website says under "applying for ARC" -
Quote:
Joining family: Proof of family relationship such as Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Household Registration Transcript issued within three months, Household Certificate, ID Card, or ARC, but foreign documents shall be authenticated by Taiwanese offices abroad. Foreign spouses who are the first time petitioners shall be accompanied by their Taiwanese husbands or wives.

Since I can't get my ARC until I'm in Taiwan with a sponsoring job ticking away, I assume both my wife and I will have to enter on "60 day visitor visas?" and apply for our long term visas a few weeks in. Nothing out of the ordinary I suppose. Would we both have to make a visa run out of country or is this done in country these days?

Is there anything special to getting the marriage certificate authenticated? If I go to e.g. the ROC embassy in Atlanta to request 2 multiple entry visas, I just ask them to authenticate our cert? Isn't it sketchy to go looking for work, so I'm not supposed to tell the embassy that? I mean, I don't want to go without at least a job offer, but I've read here only Hess will issue you a predeparture visa. Isn't there some recruiter who would hook me up with a real visa predeparture?

Furthermore, multiple recruiter websites for Taiwan and Korea seem to imply bringing a spouse is "possible" but many employers don't want to hire this situation and it would "take a long time" to find work. Is this true and if so why?

My background: American, CELTA, no previous teaching job, bachelor degree, over 5k USD savings
Wife's background: American, No degree, currently online college student

We want to go to Taiwan, and I'm open to taking most available kinds of positions there (minus Hess). I'd really like to live in Tainan, but I'm open to Korea and Japan as well if they'd work better for us. So obviously I'm not going without my wife. Should I be concerned?

Thanks ahead for your input! Smile

When I had to get my marriage certificate notarized for a visa in Taiwan (married to a Taiwan spouse) I had to get my Taiwan issued certificate certified by the American Institute in Taiwan, the logic of which still is beyond me. That being said, how to get anything certified to satisfy the bureacrats is always a mystery, the best thing to do would be call the Taiwan rep office in Atlanta and ask them how they want it done, because I don't think the Taiwan rep office can notarize your certificate.
Anyway, good luck coming here as the "principal alien"...
