I am an experienced English teacher with a TESOL cert. I spent over a year in Japan, and my humanities visa will be valid till March. I am considering a possible return to Japan, because I miss it in some ways. I also managed to learn a bit of Japanese and study lots of kanji. But Living in a Shane apartment was TOO expensive. I wouldn't do so again. Right now I have funds, and can afford key money.
But am I right in thinking with ECC you don't pay key money? Is their rent low enough in cities so that you avoid going into the red, as I did for a little while? Is it possible to save 5000 yen per month?
I could share an apartment.
If you make an effort in school, are they reasonable to work with? Do they fire most teachers every few months? Could I request an urban placement? Would they accept it if I say I prefer the kansai area? |

ECC uses a company called Apollo Properties in Kansai and in Nagoya for their teachers. The apartments are not ECC apartments, per se. The Apollo furnished-apartments are ok in the short-term but not so financially wise to stay in long-term. The un-furnished apartments are the same apartments (and roughly the same prices) you'd find going through any apartment agency.
ECC is based in Kansai so if you get hired, you have a good chance of being placed in Kansai as that is where most of the schools and positions are.
You'll certainly be able to save a measly 5000 yen a month. If you meant 50 000 yen, I'd say it's still fairly easy to save that amount at a salary of 252 000 yen/month.
If I were you, since you can speak some Japanese, after being hired I'd stay in a guest house for a month and use that time to look around for apartments on your own. You can find much better apartments if you do so.
Your last few questions have already been answered. |

Did you get a reentry permit before you left? If so, good. If not, your visa is no longer valid. Just checking.

Did you check their homepage? It's pretty clear about that.
Accommodation
ECC will arrange suitable housing for you in order to assist with a smooth arrival in Japan. ECC does not own or make profit from the housing. Rather, we utilize specific housing agents in each area. We have asked the agencies to provide fully furnished, clean accommodations without key money and other expensive charges common among housing acquisition in Japan. General feedback on the apartments is reasonably good and there is an out-clause after 4 to 5 months for those who want to change the scene. There are many shared apartments (please note these may be mixed-gender), and some private apartments in some districts, although please note private apartments cannot be guaranteed. If all the agent apartments are full, ECC will of course still arrange accommodation for you if requested.

You said you were here for a year. Therefore, you must already realize that even on a salary of 220,000-250,000 yen/month, an average apartment will not break you in rental costs. You'll have half your salary every month to spend on basic necessities (rent, insurance, food, phone/internet, utilities), and the rest to do with as you please. I would say that moderate drinking entertainment will still leave you with 50,000 - 75,000 yen/month.
ECC's web site agrees:
Q : How much can I save?
That depends on your living style and habits so it is better to give a range using the base salary (not considering any extra work). ECC teachers typically save anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 yen per month. So over the course of a contract it can easily add up to a substantial amount - or to the end of your credit card or student loans. However, please understand that while the salary is generous, it is unlikely to be enough to support a family in Japan comfortably.

Look at the home page. Kanto area is not accepting applications now. Nagoya office is but only for limited numbers of applicants. Kansai area says this:
ECC Kansai is not holding interviews for positions in the Kinki area at the moment, however, applications are accepted on an ongoing basis from all those interested. Preference is given to those residing in Japan, and further preference is given to those currently in the Kansai area. |

Just so you know experience and TESOL cert won't help you land a job there. So you'll be going in there with about as good of a shot as anyone else with a bachelor's degree. Good luck to you. |
