We are planning on comig to Mexico this summer for at least a year. We'll be bringing our dog, Floyd. I'm wondering if you have information on having your dog in Mexico. A friend tells me that dogs are welcome nearly everywhere in Mexico. Is that true? I really don't know what to expect. Floyd appreciates any information you can share. Very Happy

From my experience, dogs are very welcome just about everywhere in Mexico. If you do bring your dog, make sure all shots etc. are up to date. There are millions of stray dogs throughout the country - I'm sure you would hate for Floyd to contract something.

Are there many houses with fenced yards to rent? Or do dogs run free?

In the city where I live there are people who keep their dogs confined to their own property and people who give their dogs complete freedom to roam. Lots of dogs that roam freely end up getting hit by cars or intentionally poisoned, however. Not to sound snooty, but I don't think you'd want your Floyd running with the street dogs, at least not the type I see in my neighborhood.

By the way, have you seen the film AMORES PERROS?

I wouldn't let Floyd run around without me! I was just curious if he could get a yard?

I haven't see the film, but I'll check it out. I'm teaching a literature and film class; maybe I'll use it there...

Finding a house with a yard isn't too much of a problem, but finding a house with an ENCLOSED yard can be. If you find a place with an unenclosed yard, you may be able to negotiate a trade with the owner - putting in a fence instead of paying the rent or something to that effect.

Another concern you should have is actually taking Floyd for a walk. My dog is rather large so street dogs usually scurry away but we have been attacked on walks by dogs who think they are protecting their territory, that being the streets in front of their houses. You have to choose your route based on what dogs just bark when you walk by and which ones attack.

Lots of people where I live don't have yards, but a lot of roof space, and their dogs are there during the day, having a great time barking at all the pedestrians below. Smile

Ditto the above. One other thing to make yourself aware of is to be sure of what you need in order to bring Fido BACK to your home country. While customs here in Mexico didnt even blink when I brought my two (yes, two!) cats through the airport (I did have all the paperwork,however), I really really doubt that US customs will be so lax. Already have the name of a very reputable vet that can get all my paperwork in order.
