|
|
I made a hasty decision and came to Dubai without a job and am now looking for University teaching work. I have applied for the UAE positions I have seen advertised and want to know if anyone here has any contacts or knows of possible openings. I have a CELTA, MA TESOL and about 5 years teaching experience, with about 3 years teaching adults. Any advice greatly appreciated, I feel pretty lost right now |

This is not the way to get a job at the better universities in this part of the world. I doubt if many (any?) of them would be hiring at the moment. The problem with getting hired from within the country is that they will immediately try to make you an adjunct with no benefits... and you DON'T want to be teaching as an adjunct unless you have a spouse with a real job. Another problem is the work visa rules.
All you can do is try knocking on doors... or calling. You will need to get a rental car and expand your search to the other cities.

Whatever you do, do NOT borrow money while you are in the country or sign your name to anything. Unlike western countries owing money here can be dangerous. Debtors prisons filled beyond capacity after the collapse of the Dubai economy in 2008-09.
If I were unemployed and without a lot of cash I would beg a friend back home to wire me money and I'd get the hell out.
Having said that, good luck! |

Have plenty of money, thanks for the advice! So, will do a little travelling and hopefully one of the jobs I applied to will work out with a January start date. |

HCT is definitely hiring - desperately so. It's a buyer-beware situation.
If you're not sure why this is the case, read the rest of the UAE board and or wait for others to pipe up and tell you all kinds of horror stories.
Good luck! |

But Pik... this is the time of year that they hire "adjuncts" ... I am wondering if it is a policy or just something that they try to get away with.
So Addis24, bargain hard if you talk to them... and try to avoid Abu Dhabi Women's.
