....was peeved today watching a BBC report, which repeatedly pronounced 'enthusiast' as 'enthusiAST'. I mean, isn't that the most peeving thing in the world?!!!!

American vs. "English" spelling is a peeves of mine, personally.

I'm American, but for some reason I grew up spelling theater as "theatre", favorite as "favourite", color as "colour" and alcohol as "alchohol" and it peeves me that firefox now tells me I misspell these words!!

I read a lot of classic British literature as a child, perhaps that is how it stuck with me- but now these "quote unquote English only" spellings of the words I find so dear to me are now labeled as incorrect!

My "pet peeve" is when people point out that Americans are not Americans.

Ask any person from Canada, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama etc... if they are Americans. My money says they say - "I'm Canadian" etc...

Ask any person from Italy, Germany, Japan etc... what people from the USA are refered to as, my money says they say "American".

I guess I should have been really peeved when I met a lady from Sweden and after I told her that I was from the United States, she said - "You Americans...."

I thought about it, and I do have a pet peeve. Now, I'm not sure how it is for other people who don't have English as their first language, but I've noticed what I'm about to share is the case when it comes to Japanese speakers. I even noticed it before coming over here because of my Japanese teacher.

Anyway, it somewhat bothers me when speakers of Japanese with English as their second language use "maybe" in the same context as "yes". I never thought much of it prior to coming here, but it's annoying to me now. For example, one of the teachers here was timing one of the students that's going to participate in the upcoming speech contest. I asked him, "Are you timing her?" His response was, "Maybe." A "yes" would have sufficed.

Another example that comes to mind, has to do with an upcoming enkai. I was asked if I would like to go to it, but given the time, as well as the　￥7000 price, I said, "Maybe", since I wasn't sure if I'd be able to. I kind of said that out of habit, though. When I'm unsure about anything, out of habit, I just say, "maybe". They assumed I meant "yes" and put down that I will be attending.

I feel funny correcting those who do constantly do this, because they've managed to do something that I haven't...learn another language fluently enough to hold a decent conversation. I don't feel I have the right to say anything, you know, unless it's something that may come across as offensive or strange to an English speaker, like the whole cook/cock thing.

So, there you go. An actual pet peeve.
