Let's 'do' lunch or we could 'do' any number of geographical locations or fashionable clubs and restaurants. |

I recall NCTBA being equally rude about my first offering on this thread. So ssjup81, I'd consider this to be the "anointing" phase. |
Well, when I wrote that, I couldn't finish it. One of the other teachers needed the computer. Either way, seems I usually get "peeved" with some writing mistakes made by native English speakers. I also didn't feel that NCTBA was being rude or anything.
That aside, I'm generally laid back, so not much bothers or annoys me, unless teenagers with attitudes count. |

He, he, he... As we all know now, I am self-admittedly a straight-shooter, altho I try not to be offensive unless we have an O.T.T. personality who wants to stretch he verbal "wings" at me (we recently had one...an' I gave him the rope).
My reference was focused of the late, great Sasha who went overdrive on this thread. That poor man had peeves coming around every corner! Next to him, dear poster, yer peeve seemed a little "weak"...
Give the thread a spin...

No, no, no ssjups81, no. Neither did I.
Just a little joke about a 'rite of passage' on this thread that backfired on me (cr#p!!) through my own silly choice of words. Still, it's all been sorted out now.
I don't think any of us can hold a candle to

though.

Dear artemisia,
Hold a candle - no. But we CAN light one:

Yes, I know it's a site for pets - but hey, this IS the pet peeve thread.
In Loving Memory,

American vs. "English" spelling is a peeves of mine, personally.
I'm American, but for some reason I grew up spelling theater as "theatre", favorite as "favourite", color as "colour" and alcohol as "alchohol" and it peeves me that firefox now tells me I misspell these words!!
I read a lot of classic British literature as a child, perhaps that is how it stuck with me- but now these "quote unquote English only" spellings of the words I find so dear to me are now labeled as incorrect!
Peeved! |

Could it be that yer really a Canadian who thinks he's a 'merican?
It's O.K., it's a known fact that a majority of Canadians secretly wish that they were 'mericans... ... ...

Now you've done it. Open the floodgates.
Actually, Canadians ARE Americans; so are Mexicans; so are Ecuadorans. People from the United States of America are "United States citizens". This was a peeve earlier; johnslat, I believe.
That said, I wanna play!
What was the number one record in Canada when "Satisfaction" was number one in the USA?
I dunno, but six months later, it was "Satisfaction"!
No offense to our wonderful Canadian colleagues. I lived in Alaska for many years and travelled extensively through Canada. I like ya'll, even if you do talk funny! |

My "pet peeve" is when people point out that Americans are not Americans.
Ask any person from Canada, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama etc... if they are Americans. My money says they say - "I'm Canadian" etc...
Ask any person from Italy, Germany, Japan etc... what people from the USA are refered to as, my money says they say "American".
I guess I should have been really peeved when I met a lady from Sweden and after I told her that I was from the United States, she said - "You Americans...." |

Yup! I jes' thought that 139 pages were WAY too few for a pet peeves thread.
Let th' mud slingin' begin!
Jes' be careful 'bout the anti-this and the anti-that... Keep it all tongue-in-cheek as I have and this thread won't get locked!
NCTBA (3rd generation 'merican after Great-grand-pappy crossed the St. Mary's River in pursuit of more trees to cut down...)
P.s.- Also note that I never write American...it's ALWAYS 'merican as pronounced by the late, great L.B.J., referring exclusively to the denizen who exist between the Canadian and Mexican borders... |

I thought about it, and I do have a pet peeve. Now, I'm not sure how it is for other people who don't have English as their first language, but I've noticed what I'm about to share is the case when it comes to Japanese speakers. I even noticed it before coming over here because of my Japanese teacher.
Anyway, it somewhat bothers me when speakers of Japanese with English as their second language use "maybe" in the same context as "yes". I never thought much of it prior to coming here, but it's annoying to me now. For example, one of the teachers here was timing one of the students that's going to participate in the upcoming speech contest. I asked him, "Are you timing her?" His response was, "Maybe." A "yes" would have sufficed.
Another example that comes to mind, has to do with an upcoming enkai. I was asked if I would like to go to it, but given the time, as well as the ¥7000 price, I said, "Maybe", since I wasn't sure if I'd be able to. I kind of said that out of habit, though. When I'm unsure about anything, out of habit, I just say, "maybe". They assumed I meant "yes" and put down that I will be attending.
I feel funny correcting those who do constantly do this, because they've managed to do something that I haven't...learn another language fluently enough to hold a decent conversation. I don't feel I have the right to say anything, you know, unless it's something that may come across as offensive or strange to an English speaker, like the whole cook/cock thing.
So, there you go. An actual pet peeve.

I was peeved over the fact that, as an elementary student, I'd use British spellings of some words because I liked them better, and how my second or third grade teacher would tell me not to write that way. I don't know why I was always drawn to British spellings of things, especially words like colour or honour or theatre, etc. |

More likely I'm an American who secretly wishes they were Canadian...
Not having to be molested by crazy airport staff every time I return home to visit the folks and back when I was in college/unemployed after college (and when I eventually come back home for good and will be unemployed again)- having some instant/gov. provided health care would have been nice!
But I think truly I just secretly wish I were English which explains my nonsensical love for fish n' chips, Twinings tea, tweed jackets and the 9-season series "As Time Goes By" with Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer.
>>ssjup- I understand completely. Don't ever let firefox/U.S. spelling regulations tell you theatre is spelled any other way than "THEATRE". I applaud all your "labour" in the good fight to "honour" the "favourite" language of our forefathers' forefathers ! |
