Hi - I know Oman isn't the place to go if you want a cash camel. How goes the salary (MA and many years teaching) and how far does a Rial go compared to UAE zlotys? |

The cost of living isn't that different, assuming that your employer provides housing. As always, it depends on your lifestyle and shopping list. But, say for an MA+8-10 years of related university teaching, you could be looking at US$3-3,500 versus $4-5000 a month depending on which employer you snag in the Emirates.
But, in Oman the job will be more laid back, low pressure, and in general the students are more pleasant. And depending on your interests, many prefer the lifestyle in Oman. I personally prefer Oman over a place like Dubai/Sharjah or Abu Dhabi. But YMMV...

OK - back to the OP, reading around Oman seems to be a generally fine and wonderful place to be. Full of warm and friendly folk - any inside info on the SQU language center? |

Did I hear my name?
What kind of inside info are you requesting? There are still people in the LC that I taught with there in the late 80's... so that says something. It is certainly the best EFL job in Oman, but like all the rest of the universities in the Gulf, things have gone downhill the last few years... but not horribly far. It is a large department. (visit the website and check out the LC faculty pages.) The Administration is probably completely Omani by now, and things run pretty smoothly. The LC management is mixed nationality as is the faculty. With so many personalities, there are the usual difficulties and personality clashes... but mostly things move along rather smoothly. It is not Nirvana... but it is better than the recruiter based employers in the country out in the hinterlands.
Does that answer your question?

Yep - certainly does. Presumably the same terms and conditions apply as elsewhere in the Middle East or am I wrong to presuppose that it is more chilled than say the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain or Saudi? |

By same terms and conditions, are you referring to benefits? I'll cover it anyway for other readers. It is pretty much standard. Flights... gratuity... Nice to acceptable furnished housing (as usual depending on luck of the inventory draw), better than average medical coverage what with a hospital right on campus, a couple months off in the summer, plus semester break, and religious holidays. (Saudi always has the longest breaks for Eids) There was a bit of quiet grumbling this year because National Day wasn't combined with the Eid breaks as everyone was expecting. But... there is also the fact that this is the Sultan's 40th year on the throne, so that means that all government employees will get a bonus. I was there for the 20th and we got an extra full month's salary. Nice...
It is not as laid back as it used to be, but other than the usual final exam panic period, the pressure is definitely less than the usual university foundations program.
