Bell are recruiting for IRAQ....yep IRAQ from their cushy office in Amman, Jordan. The danger money for working in IRAQ.....(I still have to write it twice)....IRAQ is the princely sum of 30, yes thirty US Dollars per day.
This TEFL world disgusts me. After 15 years of TEFLing I conclude that it isn't worth doing. Teachers full of good intentions just get mugged off and exploited constantly.
I'm at the top end of the EFL/Oil job salary spectrum, but it still stinks. I really wish I'd never bothered. |

Just had a look for that job advert and found it. I see the required qualifications advertised are not high, as you'd expect. (However, I've often noticed that the more people demand the less they offer in return and not just in EFL).
There's a great deal of exploitation in the EFL world and it's easy to get disheartened by it though, of course, exploitation exists in many fields. The trouble is, as has been said so many times before on these forums, as long as there are applicants for such positions, then they'll continue to be offered. I can't imagine who'd sign up for that at that money. Maybe someone who's been on another planet for a while.. |

30 bucks an hour to risk kidnapping and death. Jeez. The sad thing is, some people will already have applied!
I'd be interested to know though, does it mention the basic salary? The pathetic danger money wouldn't be so bad if it was offset against a realist salary, but somehow I get the feeling this wouldn't be the case... |

Bell seem to hate me, i've applied for several jobs through them, never even got an interview. Makes me glad agencies arent very prevalant in this area of work.
I saw another job in Iraq the other day, it looked much nicer than this one. |

I'm assuming you mean the advert for General English Language Trainer. If so the ad quotes a remuneration of Base salary of '2,000USD for one year' and 'Bonus of 30USD per day while in Iraq'.
I'm hazarding a guess that that's a typo and you'd receive 2,000USD per month, on a one year contract, and 30USD per day while you're in Iraq because it says you'd receive base + housing when in Amman.
I'm not saying it's a great offer.
They also say the 'project will take place in a secure area'.
In Iraq...
Maybe that's safe relative to a police station in Baghdad? I'm guessing an army base or UN building. Or maybe the Sheraton Hotel in Basra. |

Dak- don't worry about Bell. I had an interview years ago up in Cambridge during which I pointed out that they had no right to make me pay UK taxes as a non-resident. They then started asking me really TEFLtastic questions, which given my experience and quals, were simply ridiculous. It's a McD's teaching outfit dressed up to be something else. They pay below the going rate. Their pay and conditions for Libya are appalling. But mugs do come here and work for them. |

Phew ... I was this close to signing up for them last year in Libya. Location must be pretty interesting, but there was something about the voice on the end of the line that made me choose a different job and hamdillah I did. |

That is a shameful offer. You could earn that much in Korea. Why would you go to Iraq? |

Non residents are liable to English income taxation if they breach the complicated rules regarding the amount of time you spend in the country. In my limited experience, reasonable firms will allow you to settle your own tax affairs. I for one am more concerned about the VAT increase on Pedigree Chum (vegetarian). A regressive tax and as such unfair against low income groups such as OAP Scot fellow dawg! |

Us Britons (the true island warriors) have been keeping those benefits scrounging sweaty socks afloat for decades....that's why when push comes to shove they never elect the SNP. |
