I've a friend applying for a teaching job in Malaysia who says the salary would be around 15000MYR per month. I think its a university job. Is this above average? |

As WailingImam states, that is a very good salary. The CEO of my college is on RM17k per month. Does your friend have a PhD? |

No PhD; degree, tefl + 2 years teaching experience.
Better get the salary confirmed (quoted in another currency) |

That would be helpful. RM15k for those qualifications looks too good to be true unless it is for a very wealthy company that is used to paying expat wages. (But where in the western world do TEFL teachers make US$5,000 per month?) |

If you want to include ESL in the English-speaking western world (where there is no TEFL), then you could ask an ESL teacher who works in community colleges in the U.S. Many of the better community college districts provide relatively high median salaries with tenure and good benefits to instructors who have been in the system for a while.
All such positions require the minimum of an MA in TESOL (or equivalent) and appropriate experience.
For example, my district has an average faculty salary of about $65,000. Another in a neighboring county has an average salary of about $80,000. Yet another's average is at $84,000. Schools in southern California have a similar range. Where I grew up in Illinois, the average salaries are just a tiny bit lower.
And "average" means, of course, that a good portion of the faculty members are earning substantially higher.

Obtaining a teaching post at a U.S. or U.K. university is about the highest level of position I'm thinking one can obtain. With my (2.4 gpa) business degree and future Celta cert.....many folks on here including myself are a few years off from applying to western universities.
Its definitely obtainable though. |

Isn't California one of those nigh bankrupt states? $100k TESL teachers, no doubt....Back to the Malaysia forum.
I would be shocked if there was a RM15k per month TEFL post in Malaysia with only a Bachelors degree (and/or Cert) as its qualification. Still awaiting a reply from the OP. |

You asked a question about the western world. I supplied some data.
Similar data can be found not just in the two states I mentioned (Illinois and California) but also in Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Connecticut, New Jersey, Oregon, Ohio, and other states. |

15K with 2 years ESL experience really does sound too good to be true... |
