| There was that whole other thread about how JET could be made better and I don't want to go into that, but it really is a shame that the programme is as it is. We (especially in recent years) battle so damned hard to get in, we come to Japan full of ideas and energy that should be directed into the schools but we're batted down and turned away so much that even the most serious of us can become vegetating desk potatoes. |

For what it's worth, the majority of the incoming JETs this year in my prefecture have some kind of state issued teaching credential/PGCE, not necessarily English. Those that don't have some sort of advanced language experience/credentials. The median age is also drifting up, 26-35 in this group. (This is all acording to our PA, who sees all of the applications.) This may reflect some long needed shifts in priority, coupled with an increasing amount of economic refugees in the application pool.
I am very happy with my placement, and feel incorporated into the staff and culture of my school. As for the teaching, the kids are generally great. The reality of English education in Japan is what it is, I strive to do something interesting and beneficial within it. I personally do not know any bored or unhappy JETs, and this includes two MATESOLs. ESID. |

That's good to hear. I wuz 32 when I joined...and that's when "35" wuz the oldest you could be as a JET. It's good that you know few unhappy/bored JETs as when I wuz there...most were. Oh, they adored the nightlife and the company of many of the curious opposite sex, but the job wuz the duds...

I keep telling people that things are changing (albeit slowly) but it's so seldom to hear anyone on the other end with recent experience say the same thing: thanks.
I'm going to be looking with interest at the numbers for the upcoming interviews because I want to see if the general economic situation has fed into the application numbers at all. The interviews are always fascinating from my end of things. |

I'm going to assume yes. But, on average, how many people do you think apply each year? (And how many get accepted?) |

If the application form numbers mean anything at all, when I filled mine in online the filename was application_(number).pdf to print it off (UK site). I was the 7850th applicant or something. I'd be interested to know too. |
