Here's a simple step-by-step guide to choosing a country:
1. Close eyes.
2. Open atlas to random page.
3. Put finger somewhere on random page.
4. Open eyes, observe future destination.
5. Secure job in future destination.
6. Leave current locale. |
Yes! Antarctica here I come!
If you want to get a feel for what people have experienced living in various countries, then ghost the various country fourms here and check out the job information joural. Take some of the posts with a grain of salt, though. Also check out other country-specific EFL discussion websites for coutntries you might be interested.
Otherwise I'm looking for an EFL teacher with basic fluency in Penguin to help me out on the weekends. |

yeah i have been checking out the other forums. i was poking around the german discussion forum and learned that germany is not a good place to work. the salaries are low, so it wouldn't be a place to have fun and travel.
i'm glad i found this information because i was hoping to travel to germany to teach.
to other people who are just criticising my post - i don't care what you think!
if you can't post something helpful or useful, simple, don't post at all.
i hate these people that have to post in every topic about every possible subject. that doesn't make you great.
1s650 - i'm not in my 'home' country ... wtf?? thanks for voting and telling me japan and mexico are your preferences ... that's all i wanted to hear.
shmooj - dude ... i don't care if you understand the question. if you're that stupid, don't post.
aramas - a holistic view?? wtf?? your first post shows me that you have no fucking idea what you're doing. do you just hang out here because you have no fucking friends? yes, i can see that your experience is 'limited' therefore don't bother posting if you can't add something valuable.
why are there so many people who are addicted to posting? just ahve to post something whether it's relevant or not ... that doesn't make you great or interesting, it makes you a wanker!

Fairly irrelevant post.
Okay, here's something relevant, you're a new kid on the block in many many ways. You ask a question which is very difficult to answer because it is too broad and too personal. You get a smattering of replies. Some are irrelevant to you you think and some are very relevant. You sort through and ignore those that you feel are irrelevant. If you actually thought about those you discard, you might learn something.
The trouble with your OP is that it cannot be answered by many of us. For example, I would suggest India because, in my opinion, the lifestyle cannot be bettered. This is much the same approach that Khmerhit is taking when he recommends Cambodia. This is because, for us, these places are very special and deeply affected us. However, they are not going to suit your definition of "living well" because we all have different definitions.
If you are going to post here asking for others to give you info on which to make your life decisions expect some of that info to be less relevant than you had hoped. We are all different.
As I said, you are a new kid on the block and we've seen your likes before. You'll post, get what you want, abuse those who don't tell you what you want to know, argue a bit, perhaps get a PM or two from a Moderator and then vanish without sticking around to actually contribute to these forums in the long term in any significant way.
Prove me wrong and we will all benefit, myself included. |

What I want to know is, how did Paisleyavenger succeed in raising so many option categories when he programmed the thingamajig in his thread?
I can only muster two options at a time... and don't be vulgar, thank you.

Like I said, you're asking a question of such a personal nature it's difficult for anyone to answer it. How can anyone of us possibly know what's best for you? If you ask a silly question, you should expect to get silly answers. |

khmer ... it was easy ... fill out your option, and keep pressing the add option button as you go ...
__
look guys, it ain't a hissy fit ... i've been a member of a few discussion groups and i don't like people who post something just for the sake of posting, it's like a competition to see who can reach 3000 posts first.
shmooj - if you'd said india straight up and said why, then i would have been happy ... i want other people's experiences of countries i haven't been to yet. not a philosophical evaluation of my question. if you think india, great, i value your input. i hadn't thought of india and it gives me another possiblity ... but that's it. no more needs to be said.
as for new kid on the block ... well, i'm sorry that i'm not an 'ultra' poster like you ... i've been getting jobs on dave's esl for over 3 years, before he had this discussion board. i don't care what you think because i know where i'm at and what i've done with my life. new kid on the block was a sanctimonious and arrogant thing to say ... not to mention patronising. so please don't do that. |

I'm a high school teacher with heaps of experience. I've taught in Australia, England and South Korea.
I've thought about going to a few places (Canada, Germany, Turkey, Thailand) but haven't made up my mind. Being a qualified teacher (with a masters) I can usually get a bit more money, or if I go to Canada, America or England, I can work in the education system. So I'm looking at both options.
Can people give me some ideas and advice ... what countries (in YOUR experience, not heresay) are good and bad for efl teachers?
I'm mostly interested in salary and benefits (airfare, etc) versus living costs and cultural issues.
If you don't want to type a huge response, at least respond to my poll (assuming I work out how to set it up right!) |
How do I respond to the survey? I click on the list of items and nothing happens.
However, if you're interested in coming to the US to teach in the Los Angeles area, I can give you some advice on that. Buena suerte! |

Hmm - I can't tell whether it's a case of impending spontaneous combustion or an imminent midnight run.
Paiz (or should I call you Steed?), a lot of people probably find it odd that someone would consider having a bunch of strangers vote on what you do with your life, and so are reacting accordingly. Some might say it's taking democracy too far. Perhaps a course in decision-making might be of use?
Accusing others of condescention does seem a little pot-and-kettle, although I'm told that glass houses do have expansive views - albeit fixed ones. |

The above is a laugh. It brings to mind an image of an overweight schoolboy wearing shorts, knee socks and a beanie with a propeller who throws a massive temper tantrum all over the pavement because his mother won't buy him any sweets.

well done fat chris
another person who enters a thread, posts something irrelevant, and thinks he's cool for doing it. it's easy to criticise others without actually having to think ... it's what stupid people do when they can't think of anything constructive.
aramas - thanks for your last point. yes you're right, it is a little odd, but isn't that what this community is about?
what's the point of having a discussion forum on a site that is about international jobs if you can't ask others about their experiences teaching in different countries?
quite a few people have posted some good ideas, cambodia's international schools, the developing industry in vietnam. also, mexico and india are places i'd never thought to have gone, but now i'm looking into the conditions there.
so for me, some people have already made this post fruitful. pot-and-kettle? yeah dude, maybe ... but who isn't a little hypocritical? i just want people to stop posting their opinions about everythning except this thread.
how's this: create a topic called "does paisleyavenger create stupid posts?" and i'll happily criticise myself and listen to others criticise me too ... but THIS THREAD isn't for that! |

good for you.
i'm glad i make you laugh.
simple: you've posted 2 comments and haven't said anything interesting or relevant to the thread.
so here it is ... *beep* OFF and stop posting to my thread unless you can answer the question.
i might be like the kid chucking a tantrum, but you are the kid who sits in class, gets every question wrong and then laughs because the teacher calls you an idiot. you're so stupid you can't even see what a fuckwit you're being.
there, my 2 cents. i'm done. |
