Just out of curiosity, how good is medical care? Is it inexpensive or very costly?

Has anyone had a child in Vietnam?

I didn't-but my wife did. We went to a "foreign" hospital near the airport in HCMC-I think its Korean. It sure was crowded, but it was OK and they did all the things we expected. She shared a room with a Viet lady who also was having a baby.
Our baby is healthy, growing well, and my wife has completely recovered from her cesaeran.
I would not recommend using a Viet hospital because the hygiene is obviously not up to standard. Just take a look.
To use the facilities at the "foreign" hospital we used, cost us about 16mVnD

Thanks for the replies. My husband and I are planning to go to Vietnam after our stint in Korea, and this morning he said to me, "What happens if you get pregnant in Vietnam?"

It's good to know there are foreign hospitals around, and that they are reputable.

yeah i would not worry too much about this. there is good quality care here. its not entirely third world.

Regional hospitals can be downright horrifying, but are just fine for stitches. Anything more, follow advice above-- foreign health center or Singapore/Bangkok. In an emergency, places like Cho Ray are decent for trauma as they are present with mangled motorbike aftermaths daily to practice upon.

Co-workers had a few babies at Frano Viet in Saigon, had no complaints as it was all well-rehearsed and planned.

You're going to be hard-pressed to get insurance honored pre-treatment. Hospitals will render life-saving care but will be demanding money the whole time, and in absence of cash, it is not unheard of for treatment to be delayed or given at a very reluctant quality. Cash is king, and you'll have to get your insurance to pay reimburse you later. A broken leg could easily require a payment of 10-25 million dong before the doctor will set the fracture.

Are there any health insurance options available in VN, through employers or by buying private insurance? Or is the insurance people are talking about in this thread something purchased in a "home" country before moving to VN?

There are some decent places for medical care here.

Best to ask, search, enquire for specific places after you arrive.
