I received a contract in email with an offer - but the class size is 45 to 52 students (Junior High School age). That seems like a lot of students to me. Also the contract was worded rather strangely. I have seen only a few contracts and I know contracts are different for the USA to other countries. Now I have worked with Junior High Students and that seems like a very large number of students to me.

Are class sizes normally this large?

Some public schools in Taiwan have up to 20,000 students with classes from 35 to 55 students.

It's normal for junior high and secondary schools.

Dear OP:

Trying to teach 50 Taiwanese Junior High kids would drive you INSANE. You should absolutely, positively REJECT this job offer. End of Discussion.

Would depend on the pay, wouldn't it? It would still be a bloody nightmare, but if the money was right... maybe Smile

The chances of Taiwanese paying enough to make it worth it are slim to none. Often Taiwanese want to pay 600NT for adult classes that take an hour to prepare. Why would I want to work two hours for 600NT when I could waltz into some buxiban and just open the book and get paid 600-700 without out of class work?

Strangely worded contracts are not uncommon in Taiwan, and the class size is fairly normal for junior high, as others have commented. Whether you would enjoy this kind of teaching is something else. If you are already used to high school classes in America, then it may not be so bad.
