|
|
Hello Everyone!
I am moving to Qatar in January to teach. I am a Canadian but I don't have a Canadian driver's license anymore. I gave my license back to my home province's Driving Licensing authority because it is considered as a 'Secondary Tie' for liability to pay income tax on foreign income.
My question...Can I apply for a Qatari Driver's License in Qatar?
Thanks, any input is appreciated. |

You can apply for a Qatari driver's license when you have your residency permit. Not having a valid Canadian driver's license may be problematic. It would prove that you "know how to drive" and the process to get a Qatari one would be a painless paper pushing exercise.
I would suspect, and I may be wrong, you will be required to take lessons and the theory and practical driving tests. I hope I'm wrong, as that route will take weeks if not months.
Holding onto your Canadian license wouldn't have been an issue - while CRA has that stupid form, holding onto a license is the least of the items that will mark you as resident, if you tell them. Many just tell CRA it has been destroyed or that they need one in order to rent cars in other countries (GCC licenses are not always recognized). |

Thank you for the information. It sounds like I might have to take the lessons and tests...oh the fun! But as long as I can get one, I'll be ok.
Where are you working? If you don't mind me asking. PM if you don't feel comfortable chatting on here. |

You can always take driving lessons. It's about 3000 riyals for 40 hours. Unless you're a bad driver, you usually get a licence after you've finished the course. All practicals, no theory. |

Actually I've just been told some schools charge 2,500 so I suppose you have to shop around. One popular school is on Al Fursiya Road near the Equestrian club but I don't know its name. Buy a Marhaba book when you get here. You'll find it very useful.
