Hi all!

I have a light course load this coming semester and am trying to get certified for ESL in the extra time I will have. I am in Philadelphia and so far the only program I`ve found is offered by Oxford Seminars. I have found that this company has gotten some bad reviews though. So my question if two fold:

1. Can anyone tell me the credibility of Oxford Seminars and whether or not they are a worthwhile program?

2. Is internet certification worth it? It seems to me like internet certification will not receive much credibility from employers. Am I right in thinking this?

Look through this forum (and this folder) and you'll find the same question asked 20 times and the same answer given too. In the time it took you to sign up and write the topic you could have found your answer. And in the time it took me to write this I could probably have given you an answer, but then that wouldn't encourage anyone to do anything.

I know that newbies had to have a certain number of posts to PM, maybe they still do. BUt maybe they also need a certain number to search?

Oh, possibly. That said, there are still threads on the front page of each folder about the same topic.

Ouch! Why not actually try to answer the guy's questions? Isn't it a waste of your time telling him that his question wastes your time?

Online certs are not recognized in some countries, so as ttompatz said, it depends on where you want to go. Even if they are recognized, you will likely be competing for jobs against candidates who have live, on-site certs, so you're at a disadvantage again. What other qualifications do/will you have? I'm guessing from your post that you're working on a BA. A BA+ a TEFL cert are standard minimum qualifications that most people will have, so you will need some other way to distinguish yourself. Or go to a country that doesn't require one or the other of them.

1) Ok, but the only certificates positively requested by employers are the Celta and Trinity, so why put yourself at a disadvantage?
2) Employers know about and ignore online certs/weekend certs.

Oxford isn't that good. SOME online certs are, if they have a practical teaching component. Make sure you get 120 hours plus another 6 of teaching practice.

Excuse us cranky oldbies, but when you get the same questions month after month, year after year, it gets old. PLUS; it's the end of the semester, so we're even more cranky.
