Hi all,

So after a couple months of interview, emails and research, I had agreed to take a position in Wuhan. After some delays on their end due to trouble with gov't officials in getting paperwork arranged quickly and misinforming me of the medical requirements, all of which I handled graciously, they have withdrawn their offer after deciding that they did not want to start until after Chinese New Year holidays (ending Feb 14), despite the fact they asked me to book a flight ASAP, which I already have. My flight leaves two days after my final day of work at my current job.

Maybe I should have seen this coming, but I am bitterly disappointed. I do not know what I should do, nor what my options are at this point.

Any advice would be welcome.

jilted. harsh.

1. change your flight to a later date around CNY, look for other jobs in the meantime, but fall back on your Wuhan people if nothing else turns up.

2. just come out anyway, on the ticket you have bought, but make sure that you have enough money to support yourself during an income gap of about 2 months (the time it might take to get a paycheque), and the means to travel to wherever you would have to go to get your employment visa sorted out.
Actually this is a really bad idea, because you'd spend so much on a hotel room, or you'd need a lot of money to sort out your own apartment, and you'd want cash in the bank for an emergency return home too, all in all amounting to a potential expense of somewhere north of US$2500, without a guarantee of anything falling into place. (Would be an adventure though.)

3. just cancel your flight and start the whole thing again. This time, don't book any flights until you have received the invitation letter that you need to get your Z visa documents.

I actually already received my invitation letter and I have my z-visa too. Pretty much everything is arranged.

I think it depends on if the school will provide you an apartment. If so, I agree with #2 above, if the school will let you move in before 2/14.

But, you mentioned they withdrew the offer. ???

Is the OP sure that the offer has been "withdrawn" or has the employer just re-scheduled the start date?

The offer is now only valid from Feb 14 onward. They had previously agreed to employing me as of 21 Deb, the day after my flight was scheduled to arrive in Wuhan. They changed their minds without much a valid explanation.

I have already cancelled my flight (penalty of $150, but otherwise a full refund). I sense that they there are other issues that I do not know about.

I have another question: since I already have a Z-visa from the Chinese Embassy, if I were to arrange another job with another school in a different city, could I still go there on my current visa or would I have to get another one?

Is there a date on your Z visa. It should say somewhere: Must enter China by: this date.

You can go to your local Chinese Embassy and ask them to transfer the date. They might. They might not. They could ask you to get a new letter of invitation.

The Z visa is tied to the school that issues the letter of invitation. You cannot use it to go to another school. You will need another letter and another Z visa to go to another school.

This school has made a big error and really messed up. If you do go to another school the PSB might look at that cancelled Z visa and ask why. This is unchartered territory here, it might be a problem it might not.
