I'm not trying to justify it, but I think the muggings and robberies at knifepoint are more related to the recession.

People don't have jobs but they still need to eat.

I don't think its related to the drugs war and I suspect that it's the same throughout the world- increase in unemployment and an increase in opportunistic crimes

The government IS tacking this USA drug-consuming society induced problem

And the above is another reason why Mexico just can't seem to get a grasp on the Cartels. Mexico has to stop blaming another country, its own history and its culture for not being able to stop this situation. Just as you say that a teacher can't blame the students Greg, so Mexico can't blame The U.S. for the current situation it faces.
I just hope the cartels taking control doesn't affect the EFL market in a bad way.

BECAUSE the government is going after the drug cartels we are seeing more violence.

I COMPLETELY disagree with the above. Imagine after the Sept 11 attacks there were MORE attacks happening in the States. THAT would be PROOF that the US govt would be FAILING to get control of the situation. The PROOF that the US is dismantling terror networks is because the attacks have not been repeated.
That's a sign of CONTROL, of winning. The cartels are getting more violent because they have NO FEAR. They know the govt here WILL NOT go after them with overwelming force. Simple really.
I'm sure the currecnt situation in Monterrey has really hurt the EFL market there.I hope things don't get bad here in the DF for teaching EFL.

Wow!

I think its pretty obvious that Mexico cannot do anything about the huge demand for drugs in other countries- Canada, the USA, the UK and the rest of europe.

They can only do something WITHIN their country. If we are going to examine BLAME (as you allude to) They are NOT blaming other countries, but when Hilary Clinton goes public and says that the situation in Mexico is similar to that in Colombia back in the 90's- well, how constructive is that?

Mexico is doing the right thing in fighting back. Its going to be messy. Of course Mexico can and MUST blame other countries for the problems it has. Its out of Mexicos control. How can Mexico reduce the amount of demand for illegal substances? Whereas getting students to learn in the classroom is within a teachers control.
MOD EDIT

If the attacks and insults continue, some members will be leaving us.
