Hi all,

I would like to send out a warm hello to all of you in Vietnam. I will be coming out to test the ESL job market next year in late Feb. I have no idea what I'm getting myself into but all the same I need a change.

I'm a Brit with a master's (econ.) and no dreaded CELTA. I'm 38, male and single. I used to work in the advertising and media industry but I gradually faded out of that during my studies.

I've been teaching in China (2005) but its been a while so I feel the need to get out of Europe again - this time to Vietnam!

Well, I hope to make some friends on this board and when I get over.

Great to be on board.

Translation: unemployed and/or having a mid-life crisis.

You need teacher training.

Get it.

And best of luck. We are here to help.

You cannot just walk into a class and teach English anymore.

However, with a background in economics, this can be a tremendous benefit.

4. What is the average pass rate?

The pass rate at Language Link is in line with the international average. Internationally, 92.5% of candidates successfully complete the course, and of these 24% reach Pass B level and 4%, Pass A level. 2% of candidates fail and 2.5% withdraw from the course. If you withdraw or fail, you are allowed to take the course again after waiting for a few months but you will have to pay the course fee again, except in cases where withdrawal was due to sudden illness or a similar emergency.

The above is from the FAQ section of Language Link's CELTA course.

Obviously they don't teach math there.

92.5% pass, 2.5% withdraw and 2% fail.

92.5+2.5+2 is? Yes you got it! 97%. Did the instructors eat the other poor 3%?

Don't see the point of spending $2000 - $3000 on a CELTA if you already have a TESOL / EFL / whatever cert. Want to be a real teacher? Then you'll do a year or more of post-grad in education at uni or teachers college.

Agreed, 100% but you don't really have to be a real teacher in the ESL Edutainment Industry.

I thought that a relative clause meant that when the mother in-law came over one had a slight aversion to the whole thing.

Yeah, I once heard of a guy going to an interview and upon being asked what a relative clause was, his reply was, "something to do with the family".

Any of you guys put your 'foot in it' in regards to English teaching?

Keep on rocking snolly.

Are you in Hanoi or HCMC? I myself will be heading towards HCMC.

Damn. Sad to hear that someone with so much experience is leaving, I could of done with someone like you to give pointers.

Any particular reason for leaving or is it just time to go?

Anyway, best of luck in your new adventure.

With a very young child these things make a difference.

Apart from the money and benefits, you are making a good decision in getting your child out of a dirty, slimey city into a breathable and cleaner environment. Actually it's a darn good decision.

I was born and raised in a big city (London) and the contrast I experienced when I moved to Scandinavia, was a life changing one. For the first time my thoughts became calmer and on top of this I felt a greater sense of being an individual and not 'one of the crowd'.

I would also guess that as a parent not having the daily stress of city life, would aslo reflect well on the child?

It's never so cut and dry though. If you want good health care, a reasonable education and access to various forms of culture; these things are normally offered in cities.
