Hi all,

Considering an offer from SMR Group in Malaysia. I've never heard of them before. They have been contracted to improve the level of English being used in schools and my job would include training teachers in ESL teaching. I would be provided with a car for transportation for travel between 5 different schools in one region. Any information, experience or knowledge of this company would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
S

Hi Serendipity,

Sorry I can't directly answer your question - but I looked at the SMR group, and applied for the same job (but a different company). It seems that SMR only interview by Skype, which I don't have!Laughing
Good luck if you get the job....and if I get the one I applied for aswell then I might see you over there!

ozman,
Are you just interviewing now? I was under the impression they've finished hiring for the project.

SMR are still trying to find teachers. Most likely, due to the fact that the company seems to be a bit on the disorganized side. A friend of mine had an interview via skype and was offered a position but later turned it down after several misunderstandings about start dates and contract details. Not sure if anyone else has encountered similiar problems.

It's my (limited) understanding that the contract for this project with the MoE has only just been finalised, and so 'provider' companies such as SMR et al will have to adjust the contracts they give out to prospective employees.

This is why job adverts often say 'details accurate at time of writing but subject to change'

My advice would be to check what has been changed - if all the 'benefits' are all there for example. Good luck.

I took this job, but through TeachAway. Most details are pretty clear and have not changed. I am curious to hear if anyone has heard of their placement yet. I still am unaware of where I will be placed in country, and I fly out on January 10th! I am not really worried about it though, as I understand that it is a massive undertaking, with many people in many places working on the same things.

Have you heard anything else about this job? I keep looking for more details, but most of the best information has come through Malaysian newspapers and/or my own recruiter...

There is a slight difference in the salaries listed here and on the SMR website.

Plus, this job looks very similar to this one:

The job definitely caught my eye. Curious to hear how things go for you guys.

The British Council seem to be recruiting for the same thing. And one other company on the tefl.com website. I don't know if each one is focused on specific areas, but the BC seems to be in Borneo ...

Did you get any say in the matter? Chance to express a preference?
