Got a university job offer for $3000.00 with my BA, and asked him how much with an MA, and he said it starts at $3200.00. Is this the most I can milk out of my graduate studies in Saudi?

Thank you, kindly.

I think if you can give us more background.........like..........

1. Mid-East work experience.
2. BA discipline studied.
3. Type of TEFL/TESOL/TESL certification.

This should clear up some vital missing info so that we can assist you.
Also is it a contractor or direct hire and for which university, if you feel like it.

Of course I can. It'll be my pleasure!

1. No M.E. teaching experience. The closest thing to teaching that I could get in the states with this broken economy has been part-time tutoring jobs on campus.
2. English B.A. (Language and Discourse).
3. Do I need a certificate if I'll begin work on my TESOL MA very soon?

Btw, it's a contractor for Al-Jouf U, not a direct offer.

As for experience, after one year, I might be able to teach a couple of ESL classes through an internship program, but that's if the funds will be available for it by the state.

If you don't mind me asking, how's the QassimU experience?

Well let's say Qassifornication experience. I'm lead to believe our contractor and University didn't sleep in the same bed. I think that could be said for other "members" too.

I'm glad it's over as they are glad it's over too. We seemed to have agreed to disagree. And this is as good as it gets,........ for me. Have landed a new job in Saudi. Keep tuned to the same bat channel, same bat time..........

IMHO I think that you got the right price for the job. If all that you've provided is correct then that's about par. It don't mean nothin with an MA TESOL just gets you a few dollars more. I'm or I'd be satisfied with just a fistful of dollars with no certificate.

You do realize al-jouf is located don't you?

Al-Jouf is a watering hole that camels avoid if they have a say in it.

Hell, even Ha'il is better than Al Jouf and that speaks for itself.

Cali: apply for jobs in Riyadh. You can easily make a 3500 and above if you have an MA.

I would not advise Jouf if you are new to Saudi. It's too remote and will be too much for you to bear.

You can do much better in Saudi - but go to a bigger city!!! They are desperate for teachers!! Plus make sure accommodation etc etc are additional to your salary!!

12,000 SR a month is no big deal. What about accommodation ? Other opportunities ? Overtime ? Accommodation ?

No, of course not. Just say you plan to start an MA pretty soon, and that's fine. I'm applying for a professorial job, on the basis that I plan at some point to do a PhD! Laughing

On a more serious note, some people say you should try for bigger cities as you will get more money. Maybe you would, but you would have to consider how much more. Saudi cities such as Riyadh are considerably more expensive to live in than the smaller cities and towns.

A very important factor in KSA - in fact every bit as important as the money - is the quality of working environment and life in general. You should look into factors such as working hours, the 'doability' of the location, and possibly the most important factor of all, vacations.

For example, some universities, e.g. KFUPM, have a policy of no-students-no-teachers, with up to 16 weeks' holidays a year. At the other end of the spectrum, some universities (privately owned, or using private contractors) have a policy of 30 (calendar, not working) days p.a., with a few more thrown in for each of the two Eids, and that's it. Otherwise, you get to sit and count dead mosquitoes for weeks or months on end, wondering why you are there and not somewhere else. Some of those places do allow unpaid vacation.

I would say, that bigger cities should be considered for a different reason, as some have mentioned: for a newcomer especially, they can be easier to live in than an isolated locus. But then, if you like clear, starry skies and the quiet life, maybe not. All to be taken into account.

Search for info on all of the places you apply to. Especially avoid PMU (Prince Mohammad) and Hail, but the places from hell are legion and legend in Saudi Arabia.

There is a lot of hiring going on right now in other places in the Gulf, where the pay is good and the treatment is humane. Try Qatar or Oman. Things are ever so much more civilized in those places.

Of course, if S&M is your thing, you may have found your place in the world.

The problem in Gulf states other than Saudi is that the decent jobs usually require a master's degree.

NCTBA, a masters degree does not a good teacher make. I don't agree that teachers in other Gulf States, as you seem to be implying, are necessarily better than those in Saudi. It's just that they are usually easier places to live in.

And when we consider the number of fake degrees floating around the Gulf...'nuff said!
