If you're a non-NEST don't apply to KFMMC. I waited 3 months :(after approval only to be told that they can't sponsor non-NESTs.

They can't sponsor someone with my passport. I just suppose it's the same for all non-nest passports.

BUT it was obvious from the beginning, we all know that you need wasta to employ non-nests. So it's either

a) they knew it and made me wait 3 months

or

b) KFMMC recruitment has no idea about KSA visa regulations

What is a "nest"? Last I heard that was where birds laid eggs...

OK... if you insist. Laughing But, since a job in Saudi never much appealed to me, it could be that you have avoided an unpleasant situation.

Where does the term "nest" come from? I don't believe that I've ever heard or seen it used. I have mostly seen NS/NNS...

But, this wasn't exactly unexpected, was it? It seems that in most of the world, if any institution is hiring people to teach any language, they will prefer to hire native speakers of that language... if they can afford to...

Actually there are lots of NNS teachers in Saudi and the rest of the Gulf. They are normally other Arabs or from the sub-continent, and are hired at the places that won't pay the price to get enough NS or are so infamously abusive that NS won't accept jobs there.

...although at some military bases, the military employs--through Saudi staffing and defense aircraft/weapons maintenance companies--well-paid and competent Saudi EFL instructors to complement the native speakers. The Saudis are especially effective, at least where I am, in beginning classes.

The problem is not that the institution in question prefers native-speakers. It would be totally understandable if the KFMMC rejected Valaki's application in the first place on the grounds that he is not a native-speaker. But if they offer him a contract, and make him wait 3 months before telling him that they don't have visas for citizens of his country...That's a different situation.

There are many places, e.g. the IPA, where there is a balance of NS and N-NS teachers, and the latter not being restricted to Arabs or people from the Sub-continent.

There is always the possibility that it took them that long to find out an answer from immigration. (what with that time period also seemingly including Ramadhan and the two Eids) Saudi is the only country in the Gulf that limits their visas by nationality in education. You will never hear of this elsewhere. That said, the only NNS that I taught with that wasn't either Arab or sub-continental was a Swede who was the spouse of a medical department professor.

In the UAE we had a German woman teaching Arabic... which the students found very bizarre.

But as to being strung along for months and then told 'no' ... plenty of NS teachers have had that happen for various mysterious reasons. This goes with the territory.

Based on their hiring practices? Definitely! I'm just amazed at how they can treat employees like this while paying those sweet salaries. But you have to attract them somehow I guess.

? What's to amaze? Money money money makes the world go round... you can do anything you like if you buy people's souls. And all the more so if you see your relationships with your employees as somewhere along the 'Master/Slave' matrix...

Yes they are, but when there's a line of twiddling thumbs it is a queue. However, I must admit it was an oversight on my part.

Thanks!

So, Sheikher couldn't stand it. I almost replied about the 'cue,' but couldn't remember if this is the same person that I pointed out the lose/loose problem and didn't want to seem like a meanie. Cool
