I completed my contract with a training school last year, but they treated me very badly, so I found another job at a well-known language mill in the same town (Qingdao). I decided to go home (NZ) for 3 weeks between contracts. I thought it would be no problem to get a new work visa, but my new school tell me they need a reference letter, release letter and cancellation of the FEC before they can issue a new work visa. My old school is pissed off that I went to a different school and are refusing to give the documents.
What can I do?????
I am a good teacher. I did nothing wrong. My employers are very bad, even by Chinese standards. They are the company whose CEO is in jail for raping one of my colleagues but the company is rotten from the top down nothing but lies, deceit and exploitation all the way down.
So am I locked out of China now? How can I get a work visa if my previous school wont release the documents? It seems crazy that a bad employer can keep you from ever working legally in China ever again.
Can I come on a tourist visa, and get it converted? I know people who have done this, but it is risky. Often you must take a trip to HK thats if you can even find someone willing to take you on.
There is the possibility of enrolling at university and getting a student visa. Can I do this in country? ie. come on a tourist visa, if I cant find a work visa sponsor, enrol in uni, or must I apply for the student visa outside China as per Z visa?
Thanks in advance. |

The quickest way to solve the problem is get a new passport and don't tell anyone you worked in China before. This may or may not work. Depends on the computer system of the PSB.
I would come in on a tourist visa and go to your prior school collect the documents and make a HK trip. Do not start work untill the paperwork is straght. The risk is maybe the prior school still refuses but then you can go to SAFEA or the PSB for help.
You could also have your new school go and get the paperwork.
Avoid the student visa, sounds like you really don't want to be a student.
Didn't you ask about this two months ago? What have you tried since then? |

Try a new province. One hand does not talk to the other in this fine country.
and damn, your previous boss sounds like a right piece of work.

My understanding is that no matter where you worked previously and where you want to work next, you must, in the least have the release letter and in many cases a letter of recommendation.
As far as I know a school is obliged to give teachers a letter of release. How long they may choose to drag their feet over such matters is another thing altogether.
Once course of action is to get someone high up in your new school, the owner if it's a private school, to give the old school a call and get them to mediate on your behalf. It may even come down to chucking a few greenbacks in their direction to get things going. Once your new school can get its mitts on the required documents, it's a green light. |

I wish that you would name names, and fully understand that you cannot do so until your get this matter resolved, so, when it is resolved, please let us all know which one of the "well-known language mills" it was so that others do not get stuck with them. |

Ditto. I'm one of only two women at my school, so this is terrifying. |

Don't worry I will. However, there are not very many big schools with the CEO arrested for rape. It was a big scandal in China. Anyone who does a simple web search should turn his ugly face up. I have kept a diary of every day in China, I fully intend to release the worst of it once I have washed my hands of this evil school.

Yes, I did. Since then I have had the Chinese runaround. Qingao says talk to Shenzhen, Shenzhen says talk to Qingdao. People telling me to talk to other people who tell me to email people who never return the emails. I have had my new school talk to them, but to no avail.
Yes! Two f@#%ing months! They really don't want me to go and work for their rival. I can't see them giving me these documents after all this time and effort. That's why I'm asking about other avenues.
I really can't believe they can prevent me from working in China again. |

If you are treated so, so, so badly then why would you go out of your way and through the difficulties of deceiving people by getting a new passport, let alone the red-tape of getting a new passport, and stressing over release letters, recommendations, etc. when it would be simpler to get a job in your own home country. What forces you to remain here under such extreme conditions ?

The OP said nothing about getting a new passport. That was a suggestion by someone else.

Because despite all the problems, I love China and that's where I would really like to be. Yes, the company is awful, but my students and workmates were (usually) lovely.
I'm currently stranded jobless in New Zealand, bored out of my mind and really missing the madness of China. If I were in China, I think I could more easily sort this stuff out. I think I might just have to go on a tourist visa after new year. Not ideal, but other than get another passport, what choice do I have?
Thanks for the help guys - keep it coming.[/code] |
