Probably best to post this in a general forum. Most people here are going to be in Mexico.

By the way, I see that you've started a series of threads in the last couple of days. How's the job hunt going?

I posted on the general forum as well. The job hunt has been suspended until early January due to the Holidays, but there is an institute that wants to meet with me in early January so let's hope.
Thanks for asking. Smile

Well, good luck. I know that we all have things to say, questions to ask, and advice to give on this forum, but good things happen when one is out there meeting people, working, and applying himself. Talk only goes so far. I think the question of whether a Masters is useful is debatable and really irrelevant. For some positions it is important, for others no. It would be better if you got your feet planted and really examined what is you want to be doing. With a concrete goal in sight, you will know exactly what you need do to get there.

So, there's no one here in Mexico City or the whole country of Mexico teaching EFL with a Masters? Perhaps my professor friends back in the States were right about EFL outside of the States.
They told me that there wouldn't be many teaching EFL with advanced degrees.

I have a Master's in TESOL, but I have not taught abroad yet. I have been working here in the US as a teaching associate and am starting to get part time work at community colleges, as well. You need a master's to work at a community college in the US.

However, from what I've researched, a Master's is going to help you get paid more, especially if you want to work at a university. With a Master's and US citizenship, you are also eligible to apply for the English Language Fellow Program. Check out their website here:
http://elf.georgetown.edu/

I have seen that some of the higher paying jobs in more developed TESOL markets (Japan, Korea, the Middle East) require a Master's for university teaching positions. A Master's alone is not as valuable as a Master's + 2-3 years of teaching experience, though. Like another person said on this forum, it would be best to post on the General Forum because you will probably get a better response.

Good luck with your search![/quote]

I worked at a community college in Texas teaching ESL with only a bachelor. Perhaps things have changed since 2008.

I don't know. I am in California, so maybe the requirements are different here. Or it could just be about demand.

These are the current requirements in California:

"Masters in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR
Bachelors in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND Masters in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR
The equivalent"

I think you can technically teach at a community college with a bachelor's if you can prove that you have "the equivalent" of someone with a master's, but it's an lengthy, annoying process, I think.

And if you are competing with people who have master's degrees, I don't think you stand a chance, so it probably depends on what your competition is.
