Musheireb exodus after power cut notice Some shopkeepers have written to both the UPDA and Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urging them to give an extension until after Eid-al-Adha

A shop notifying customers of its departure

Goodbye Musheireb, see you at Barwa Village is the message hanging from hundreds of shops in the Musheireb area from where an exodus is underway following a notice of electricity supply termination issued by utility firm Kahramaa. The notice was served on October 18 with a cut-off date of November 1 on shops and residential tenants in an area, once bustling as a business hub.
An earlier notice, issued by the Land Acquisition Department (LAD) of the Urban Planning & Development Authority (UPDA), was served on shops on August 19 with a deadline of September 15. It passed without any incident.
Later enquiries with UPDA revealed that their part of the job has been completed with the onus now on Kahramaa to cut off the electricity.
Things have been so uncertain in this area. Our lives have been affected. Of course, the area has to go. But theres a minor tremor in the area every time a new deadline is given, a trader said yesterday.
The Kahramaa notice gives a cut-off date and a customer service number (4449 4461). Attempts by Gulf Times to contact an official on the number were unsuccessful yesterday.

The demolition in Musheireb, being carried out in phases, began in October 2008.First to go were phases 1A and 1B where re-generation work is already underway, with phases 2 and 3 under the axe now.
These start from the right side of the Arab Bank Roundabout when coming down from Souq Waqif towards the Jaidah Bridge. Hundreds of shops dealing in electronics, hardware, clothing and watches dot the area.
Among the affected areas are the streets of Nakheel and Musheireb and the alleys of Al Eid, Ibn Ishaq, Al Deera and Al Ghafat. A mosque, Al Iman Al Hassan Bin Ali, has also been served the notice.
This has been anticipated. However, again the time given is only 13 days. We run a million riyal business with tonnes of stock. Its not easy, an official of an electric appliances store said.
Some shopkeepers have written to both the UPDA and Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urging them to give an extension until after Eid al-Adha.

Eids are the biggest time of the year for any business in Qatar, a shopkeeper said. While some of the traders have found outlets in Barwa Village, others said they were still looking for suitable places.
With the shops in phases 3 and 4 receiving notices, only a handful of shops, about 50, will remain in the area called phase 4. This includes the Souq Hamad Bin Abdullah and shops and commercial complexes around and facing it. Phase 4 is marked for demolition in June 2011.
Musheirebs redevelopment is planned to be completed by 2016.

Too bad this came to Doha after I left last year.
It sounds fantastic.

Pearl-Qatar lights up for glitterati

The Pearl-Qatars La Croisette lit in a purple and magenta hue for the DTFF event
The Pearl-Qatar was the venue for some of the biggest names in regional showbusiness during the Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) last month, hosting the official VIP after party on opening night for nearly 1,300 guests with Qatar Airways as the official sponsor.
Among the stars spotted at The Pearl-Qatar was Egyptian superstar and DTFF Jury President Yosra who arrived with fashion designer Stphane Rolland, Nabila Ebeid, Mallika Sherawat, Ahmed Ahmed and Carmen Lebbos.
Julian Schnabel, Yasmine Al Massri, Selina Lo and Doha Film Institute executive director Amanda Palmer were also in attendance, adding to the glamorous setting, where Mashrou Leila Band gave an exclusive performance.
In a magnificent purple and magenta setting that took in The Pearl-Qatar at 1 La Croisette, VIP guests enjoyed the best in luxury food, top regional entertainment into the small hours of the morning and magnificent views of Dohas West Bay, seen from the most glamorous address in the Middle East.
Hosting the official opening night VIP after party for the DTFF allowed The Pearl-Qatar an opportunity to once again present itself as the premier luxury and lifestyle destination in Doha.

Actually it sounds as if things have improved a little. I recall landing at the airport in Bahrain to change planes. When I walked into the terminal, it was like a refugee camp. There were sari-clad women filling every chair, sleeping all over the floors... and the women's toilets had to be seen to be believed. They were bathing, doing laundry, and it was... a bit of a mess. I finally found a Gulf Air person and he told me that this agent from Sri Lanka would brng in a planeload and dump them there... with no food or money... for up to a week until they were finally flown off to Kuwait or Qatar or Dubai... where they waited around for another day or two or three until their sponsors bothered to pick them up.

And who said that slavery was dead... Rolling Eyes

The parade this morning on the Corniche was amazing. A suitable farewell for me and all the good years (and bad) I had in Qatar. I won't forget this place, the jobs I had and the friends I made.

Simply amazing. It's wonderful that they got the FIFA bid. I hope to come back in 2022 to see the games. Great stuff!!

Good-bye.

If I hadn't been there last night, I wouldn't have believed it. Just amazing, the patriotic fervor was overwhelming. I wish this country the best. For the most part, it's been good to me.
