EF - English First, Berlitz, Wall Street, how do these companies compare? Which should i go for?
It seems EF offer 11,000, but 40 hrs work- 25 teaching. Seems like a hassle if i have to sit around preping. |

When I am not wrangling actual students, I need to be on site from 9:00 to 6:00. This gives me plenty of time to look over last week's lesson plans, figure out what worked and what didn't work and to create new ones. It also gives me time to be available for demo classes and promotional activities.
However, it gives me the most time to sit on my butt in a heated office with WiFi.
Whenever I start to get bummed, I try to remember that it beats digging ditches. |

I have a friend in England who digs up the roads for British Gas. He puts in more than 40 hours a week and takes home roughly 1k GBP per week after taxes. Not a bad gig if you ask me. |

If at all possible, avoid any schools that insist on office hours or other forms of face time where you have to be there when not teaching. This kind of face time is an extremely annoying requirement that saddles most of the locals, and contributes to a work culture where people just show up and are not productive. If foreigners also get stuck with this kind of a work culture abroad, then Lord help us all.
The best way to plan and prepare lessons is on your own time, and respectful employers will realize that. Realistically, I find it takes about a 1:1 ratio of planning to teaching, and then throw in marking on top of that. Yes it's a lot of work but I do it at a pace and a location I feel comfortable in. For the record, it can be at home, at Starbucks, or at the office if I might stay for a bit and do the prep as my energy level determines. That, or until I get tired of all the idle chatter from my Chinese colleagues who are just filling time. |

Not where I work. These kind of work cultures are to be avoided regardless if they are standard or not
