Just seen this advert for IH Xian...they are calling it a 3-6 month internship, but the terms are ...... hmmmmm, Ill let you decide.

25 teaching hours a week plus 10 promotional hours doing demo classes at other Universities and schools.

3 person shared accom.

Free Chinese lessons, free school lunches, mobile with 50 RMB credit.

And heres the meat and bones of the package.

2000 RMB flight allowance.
2000 RMB monthly stipend/allowance.

OK, there might be some mileage in a 'try before you buy' internship. But 2000 a month for 35 hours a week offers a return that even makes me cry!

Answering that ad should be a federal crime with mandatory sentence guidelines.
Or, as one of my students would say:
"Oh my Lady Gaga."

that would not equate to 35 hours.

you must factor in another 10 or so hours of travel time.

The sad thing is that I bet someone jumps at the chance.

It's not a crappy job, it's an "internship" . A real career move. Wink

There is almost nothing that would make me consider this; the rest of it's bad enough, but this clinches the yuckiness.

I'm sure applicants will be told: Don't look at is as a crappy job for foreigners, look at it as a good job for Chinese!

I almost took a job with IH in Poland this year, but had to back out at the last minute due to personal issue, but I keep checking their site for vacancies.

I did have a moderate level of interest in working for IH and they dont have many places in China, so I was pleased to see this ad ... until I read it!

GWOW, I was thinking if it looked bad to me, you would risk a coronary reading their package! Smile

No doubt someone will come along defend the offer, tell us how they can live on 20rmb an day and then mention how they could save more on a measly offer like this than they would back home. Shocked

14 RMB an hour ?? US$2 an hour ??

An offer like that deserves having several dozen people reply to their ad just to waste their time and tell them what their offer deserves.

When a school offers "free Chinese lessons" they never materialize and when you inquire about such lessons the school usually offers one of the FAO staff to teach you. Then when conducting the "lesson" he or she will moan about how they have no idea on what they should do. These "lessons" usually die out after a week or two.

Yeah, free Chinese lessons arent normally up to much. The only thing I would say in defence of this outfit is the school appears to be pretty much set up to teach a number of foreign languages, not just English. They also have an intern job for a German teacher ... Im kinda guessing their set up for such things might be better, but who knows?

As I said initially, they may be some mileage in a short term internship type role to try things out, but the real killer to me is the working hours on this one. 25 class hours plus 10 demo hours is a massive schedule! If this was just ten hours a week total, Id say it might be worth looking at on a short term adventure!

Oh, and its CELTA holders only too.

That sounds almost as bad as those "volunteer" opportunites where you pay an outrageous "program fee" fot the privilege of working for nothing. (Of course, that includes airport pickup.)

Keep looking.

For someone with certs and years of teaching experience, there's no need to settle for anything under 10,000/month, 20-25 hours per week + no shared apartments.
