I don't know anyone there at the moment... but I am curious, have you run into job openings there?

There are jobs in Iraq. I know one teacher currently in Takrit, which was the home base of You Know Who.

Loads or money. Free small-arms training before deployment.

Dear scot47,

"Right. Sign up to be with the other mercenaries in the forces of occupation."

Have Gun, Will Travel.

Aw, come on - how many times have YOU wished you had an M-16 (or the like) in the classroom?

Regards,
John

Not another gun thread boys!! One was way more than enough... Rolling Eyes

There have long been jobs up in Kurdistan, and there are military related EFL teaching jobs at some of the bases and also with the embassy in Baghdad. But I hadn't seen or heard of anything in Basra.

Just the thought of "military" combined with "middle east" makes this sort of mess seem inevitable, doesn't it? Laughing

Great salary and benefits... should be able to save darn near 100% of that after taxes - since it exceeds the limit that the majority of us have never neared.

Thanks, all, for the comments. I had been hoping for some on-the-ground intel regarding security and the general situation regarding safety, but I guess not too many people are there at present.

There are many English Language instructors in Iraq. The jobs were never advertised. Most teachers are former military instructors who retired after 20 years and did a crash TEFL course. Apart from the notorious DLI window-dressing program, the majority are Arabic speakers.

The few teachers with no military background are all hardened Middle Easterners. I did skype interviews for EL program contractors. My instructions were to let the candidates wait for the interviewer to fill them in on the security situation. If the candidate asked first, they'd failed. Ladies and gentlemen, this is IRAQ. Contractors expect people to know what they're letting themselves in for. One candidate asked if Basra was in the north. Just google a couple of blogs about the place instead of sitting in front of the camera like a frightened kitten.

PS. I don't work for EasyBELL.

What is a 'hardened Middle Easterner'?
