I have tried and failed to find a definite answer to this question. I'd like to know what people think based on experience, or in the case of a miracle someone might know where the government posts the rules which we (you, me, the customs drones) all have to follow.
I quit my job, six months notice, and my work permit will be cancelled. My job has several answers to this question, so I thought I'd ask everyone else.
thanks,

Once your employer signs the Cancel Contract Agreement with you and mails it in, you have, in theory, seven days to apply for a work permit for another job.
In reality, this seven days is not exact. The mail could go slower or faster.
Once the government has received the documents and cancelled the work permit, you have a week to leave the country.
So the short answer to your question: two weeks (though you can only switch the work permit for one week)
Obviously this creates a serious dilemma if you are trying to stay continuously in Taiwan (like if you're on the verge of getting an APRC), since it is nearly impossible to find a job in seven days.
If you want to make sure not to break up your continuity, do these things:
- Get double-sponsored -- kindy in the mornings and language school in the evenings. With two full-time work permits, your chances of being in a desperate situation are reduced exponentially.
- As soon as you get the slightest hint that you might get fired, start job hunting.
- Schedule job interviews even when everything seems to be going fine, just in case.
- If you are fired or quit, drag your feet -- say that you're too busy to sign the Cancel Contract Agreement on day x and suggest day y to buy yourself more time. I have also heard (though I'm not sure if this is true) that if your employer broke a law, especially in the firing procedure, you can draw out the amount of time by filing complaints with the authorities (like the Labor Bureau).
- NEVER GIVE SIX MONTHS' NOTICE, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER. Give the minimum amount required by law, or the minimum amount stated in your contract -- AT MOST 30 days. You see, your employer could fire you instantly, and you'd be at risk of being booted out of the country long before your next job started.
I have managed to switch from one employer to another twice in Taiwan. The first time, I was fired (by Hess), and scrambled to find a job -- it was the worst part-time job you could possibly imagine, so I hunted (at a more leisurely, care-free pace) for another job. I've been at that job for between ten or eleven months now and things there are relatively peachy. |
