So, you just blow smoke in people's faces, and screw them if they don't like it?

I thought initially you were just naive. Now, I very strongly suspect you are anti-social and irresponsible as well.

Quote:
I assure you, any person who asks me nicely, to please not smoke near them, because they dislike the smell. I will honor the request immediately.

So, if we say something like, "I'm sorry to interrupt your smoking, although it is severely affecting my health and that of others, but pleeeeease, I beseech and implore you, Mr. Very Nice Man, could you possibly, maybe just consider, puleeeeeeze, refraining from smoking in my presence?", you will maybe, if the mood takes you and I have been sycophantic enough, deign to put out your fag? What a gentleman you are!

Hmmmmm...to be honest, light up your filthy smokes in my face with an attitude like yours, and I would be taking measures to make you desist that would fall well short of what you might consider "nicely"! Twisted Evil

OK, folks, let's rephrase all those rude NO SMOKING signs we see everywhere.

BTW, just for the record: if someone ran a hose from the exhaust pipe of his car to right in my face, I would also ask in a less-than-polite manner for him to remove it. Rolling Eyes

No, he won't, because that won't be the real reason. According to him, the real reason is always dislike of the smell, and not any ill-effects on health. See, he can read your mind... actually, he doesn't have to... he has already decided what everybody's reason is for not liking smoke in their immediate vicinity!

Sadly, I have been called ignorant, selfish and even had responses bordering on hatred..
This is clearly a hot topic... but although I think I've tried to explain my position unambiguously, I suspect my points are being overlooked in the heat of the debate.

I do not contest that smoking is bad for my health.
I do not believe though, that the 10-20 cigarettes I light up every day cause anywhere near as much damage to the air that I or others breath than just the first morning startup of your cars. (Without even considering the additional damage to the air after driving it wherever, all day.)
Yes, I know, we can't ride bicycles (because we're all too big from McBurgers) and we can't ride horses and camels (because they're uncomfortable and smelly and have no air conditioning) so we'll just keep spewing fumes because... actually, because it's nice and confortable and cool (in both contexts) to drive a car. (Sure, it's killing the air ... and us ... but it's ok, we can't smell it, because the windows are closed and the A/C is on, so it must be ok..)
I like smoking (seriously) even though I know it's taking some time off my life. But their are many other factors affecting my health, that I have no control over anyway, that I choose to rather enjoy the things I enjoy.
And I will (and do) extinguish my cigarette whenever I am asked to. (With or without a please). I am not that inconsiderate that I have ever (or will ever) intentionally blow smoke in anyones face. In fact I am often very aware even of the direction of the wind, to always try to stay downwind of anyone nearby who may not appreciate the smoke I exhale.

I just think we need to put cigarettes into perspective and spend the time and money on more important things like feeding children who are dying instead of worrying about whether we will live to 80 or 100. (Those kids are dying before they get to 10.. )

Wow, just wow. I thought finally you were writing a serious post.

No, that's not the reason the majority of the world drives cars (or takes a taxi, or the bus, or gets a ride with a friend). Do you really believe this stuff you write?

That't not what you said in your earlier post, where you told us that you would put it out only if we were honest with the reason, and saying that it was damaging to our (the nearby victim's) health was not the true reason. And that the only true reason was dislike of the smell. Here is a reminder:

Quote:
But any person who has arrived in a car and asks me to stop smoking because I am "killing them" ..... I am tempted to challenge them to a smokathon. I will smoke 20 cigarettes, simultaneously and continuously, while they breathe the fumes from the exhaust of their car. (I will even allow them the use of a filter.) We will see who lives longest...
This is my point... be honest and I will respect the request.. but the second hand smoke from my cigarette, I assure you, is having such a miniscule effect on anyone elses longevity, that it is hardly worth the amount of time, money and energy it receives.

So which is it? You will honor anybody's request, or only of those who are being 'honest'? Rolling Eyes

Exactly, so spend your cig "time and money on more important things like feeding children who are dying". Furthermore, since you at least agree that it is taking a few years off your longevity, those extra years you gain back by quitting could also be spent "on more important things like feeding children who are dying".
