It sounds like the new foundations students are expecting to get delivered each morning to the college by some sort of bus? Had they been providing any transport for students previously?

It's because some students live so far away that HCT Fujeriah can be up to a 2+ hour commute for them. In one area that I know of, students are picked up on the bus at 5:30 a.m. in order to make it to their morning class on time, and then they have to wait until 5:00 in the afternoon to be driven home (arriving home after 7:00 p.m.). That makes a 14 hour day and a very ticked off student / family, especially on days when they only have 2 hours of classes. |

Wow!! that's awful. Are you saying that this has always been the case or is this new since they can't go to UAEU now?

I'm not sure if HCT students have always done this, but it's a new thing for UGRU / UAEU students because when they study on the UAEU campus, they stay in the dorms (and are bussed home at the weekends). |

The vast majority of students at HCT Fujairah have always travelled by bus (it is arranged for by the college). And yes, some of them have had long commutes. However, for the diploma students there was usuallly an 8am start and a 9 am start finishing at 3 and 4 pm respectively. This may have changed because of the additional students. |

My 15 years in the Emirates and Saudi pretty much indicate to me that whenever these national and local officials make changes, their decisions invariably are designed to make things more difficult for everyone. College for some has become a 14-hour daily prison. It's quite insane. Not like going to college back in the west, what? We think 18 hours a week in class and the rest being free time to do and go where we like is overly rigorous! And...does anyone think we're getting an inferior education? Where's the common sense? At my job, too, in Saudi, anytime a decision is made, it's always to everyone's detriment because the mentality is that we should be tortured. Army lieutenants should get up at 4 am and do calisthenics, then take an exam and then do six periods in class. It's still a great job because I still work from 8 am to 1:30 pm, but I see the handwriting on the wall. What the hell, let's just schedule 10 hours a day and be done with it. In the Emirates, why not just put the young "ladies" in holding cells and have them take 12 classes a day and be done with the dumb decisions for a few months. |
