|
|
I have a Diploma in TESOL (with Business) and have taught English in Thailand. I now work in adult education and plan on heading overseas again in 5 years time, by which time I will have completed my Diploma in Business Administration, 5 years of asessing/moderating/training, and 5 years teaching ESL to new immigrants part-time.
But still no degree.
I would like to live in several different countries over several years and teach Business English to adults, with the UAE a part of that.
My question is, should I also complete a degree part-time, either a Bachelor of Education (Adult Education or TESOL) or a Bachelor of Business (Communication), over the next 5 years (I am used to working and studying), or is this an overkill for what I want to do?
P.S. At this point I am a 30 year old native New Zealand female, living back in NZ.
TIA. |

A degree is the minimum requirement to get any type of teaching work overseas, and even having just that will keep your options very limited.
Definitely get your degree and a CELTA to go along with it, especially if you want to get jobs outside of SE and NE Asia. |

Thanks for your input. I was able to get a WP in Thailand without a degree but did assume that wouldn't be the case all round... I'm hoping a degree with the amount of experience I will have in adult education and ESL will make me employable... |

If you are interested in getting into teaching adults in the Middle East, you will need a BA in ESL/EFL education - if there is such a thing - with supervised teaching as a part of it. If you do a BA in business or an English related degree with no supervised teaching, you will need to add a CELTA to get into the entry level jobs. To get into the good jobs, you will need an MA in Applied Linguistics/EFL.
If your interest is teaching business English, the Gulf is probably not your best choice. In Asia, this is in demand, but in the Gulf... not so much. Most of the jobs for women teaching adults are in university foundations programs.

So to teach Uni do you think a Bachelor of Education (Adult Education) and 6 years experience teaching ESL would suffice? Or would I really have to do a Bachelor of Education (TESOL)? Both are on offer but I would prefer to do the Adult Ed as it keeps my options wider... |

I have no idea what kind of BA would be better because in most cases little or no attention is ever paid to the BA... only that you need one. It is normally any old BA plus a CELTA for the lower level jobs.
You may be able to get a job at a few universities, but all of the high payers with the best conditions in the UAE require a related MA.
