Can anyone shed light on the rumour that foreigners who have worked for the ministry for more than 6 years may be let go, due to potential migration issues?

What is a "migration" issue?

There is no ability of any foreigner to become a citizen just by being employed in the Sultanate. After all, I know many teachers who have been there for over 20 years... and counting.

If they decide to limit teachers to X number of contracts, it will be for some reason that will be completely illogical to us...

Before I left the college this was a well known fact. From what I have been told by a friend who still works at an MoHE college and has been ther for that length of time, there is indeed a rule stating that after that period of service expatriate employes must be let go.

However, recently is seems that her Excellency the Minister for Higher Education apparently realised that by doing this it would result in the loss of the most experienced people, so she has cancelled the order.

I have had this information second hand, perhaps someone on site could clarify??

Was this just the "recruiter" hiring colleges? I know that it isn't true at SQU or at the private universities that I am familiar with...

If it is a "well-known" fact, why is it that it has never been mentioned here... and I have never heard of any of my friends being told this or affected by it. SQU used to - every few years - go through a spell of concern about so many long term teachers. They would not-renew a few of them and some would leave, but those who went to Admin and asked to stay were invariably renewed. But we are talking about teachers who had been there for more than 10 years... and as I said some are now well over 20 years.

You know how an oft-repeated rumor turns into urban legend. Who knows... Laughing ... this is Oman, after all.

Thanks Duffy for your kind response. Glad to hear they have reconsidered. Hopefully someone may have some more useful information on this.

You still haven't explained what a "migration issue" is supposed to be.
