Absolutely! Tonight's the student Christmas production, tomorrow the staff party... payday plus aguinaldo (Christmas bonus) ... I don't have to think about school until Monday January 10th... oh, and that will be payday too... and then January 20th will be payday again...

Now who was it who said working for yourself .................was the way to go?

Theatre in any city in the world...annual dividend...make your work an extension of your life, not a clock-in type culture...and make pay-day a bonus above and beyond the satisfying, full life you lead

Do it well, and anything is possible!

JUST TEASING!!!! Wink

A Merry Christmas & a PROSPEROUS New year to you too, Dragonlady

Geez Samantha... for a minute I thought I'd logged into the Viagra thread by mistake!

Originally Dragonlady said something along the lines as "And who says working on your own is the way to go!"

Don't know why it was removed by her. I work on my own and the comment didn't bother me.

I actually have only one complete week off, and two pretty light weeks. Companies have decided to take slightly different vacations, so the time doesn't overlap.

It's a bit of a drag. I've been feeling a bit run down and could use more of a break. But I feel the need to make myself available if I'm going to charge accordingly. When it's all said and done, for me nothing beats being my own boss. I really couldn't go any other way. I just finished a semester at a university and I'd definitely hesitate going back.

I'm wondering if having an MA in Education or an MA in TEFL would get the pay up for one in Mexico?? Anyone in Mexico teaching with a Masters and making good money? By good I mean more than what the language schools are paying?

With the department of education working to professionalise EFL teaching, an MA in education would definately allow you to get a better paying job.

Personally, I think that a position in a language school, in such a case would allow you to be in a city for a shorter period of time, while earning some PIN money and investigating other teaching opportunities, such as at a university.

It's been said many times before, but very often the difference between getting the position and not is bieng in the right place at the right time. Of course haveing an MA will help a lot!

Having an MA in a related field will get you a job at a university. Usually more money. Often times it's the benefits and hours that make the difference more than actualy pay.

The difference in pay (in SLP anyway) between having a masters and not having one is about $40 pesos an hour in a university.

Wow!! Shocked

Almost makes it not worth getting an MA unless one moves to another EFL market where the salaries are higher.

Mexico is not a place to come if you are expecting high salaries. The top Time Share sharks, are the exception to this general rule.

What percentage difference is that?

On a full time job, that's 76,000 more pesos per year (a good chunk eaten up by higher taxes). That's a pretty good difference, though I imagine part time is far more common.

Yes, that applies if you're on "honorarios" - for example a teacher with a degree will get say $100 an hour and one with a masters $140 the hour, depending on the place.

I don't think it works the same way if you're full time, although maybe it does judging by the range of cars there are in the teachers' parking lot.

In some places, full time uni teachers make 2,000 more a month with an MA.
