Hi

My name is Alberto Leung. I'm a bit of a noob so I was wondering if anyone could set me straight.

Is HK's Post Graduate Diploma of Education significantly different to the Australian one?

Can you work as a ESL tutor (NOT NET SCHEME) with a bachelor of arts and a TEFL?

I have family in the area so VISA and accomodation aren't really important. I hear that you can work in a Language Centre and earn about $13000 a month.

I've wondered about this as well - is there any harm in going up and working in a few private language institutes and doing the PDGE in Hong Kong once I'm ready? Also, would my PDGE from Hong Kong be enough to be considered a "certified teacher" in other East Asian countries, more specifically in International Schools in Korea and Japan?

As regards finding private language school TEFL work paying around HKD13K and upwards a month, yes, any degree and a decent TEFL qualification is enough.

As for whether the local PGDE is recognised outside of HK, this has come up before and I think the answer is complicated. The problem (I suspect) is that PGDE/PGCE courses tend to be focused (understandably) on the local education system. Consequently, other education systems, although recognising your QTS status, may well feel that you can't teach kids on their patch without taking a local course. And this is going to vary from country to country. I suggest you get the lowdown from the course provider ...

So I'm wondering if I do my PGDE in Australia will it be useful when I return to Hong Kong?

It's understandable that it would work the other way around since assessment of coursework in Australia (melbourne) has switched over to VELS Victorian English Learning Standards.

Does anyone here have any ideas?
