Hello,

I am an American who has currently finished my CELTA course in Australia, and I'm looking to gain some experience teaching overseas in Vietnam before I go back to the US. However, the problem is that I only have a few months to give before I have to be back at work. I know this might be unrealistic, but does anyone know of any schools which offer short-term (paid) teaching positions in Vietnam? Possibly emergency teachers, or substitute positions? I have done a lot of research and all I see is the typical 6 month to 1 year contracts.

Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Bri

At this time of year there are very few ELT positions open in Vietnam, leading up to Tet, Chinese new year. Once the celebrations have died down and the hangovers cleared, then positions start to open again.

Given this year Tet is early Feb, you wont start to see positions advertised until late Feb starting in early March.

Most short term positions are in summer months, June to August.

I guarantee any short-term needs are being eaten up rapaciously by the already-hired teachers from now until the end of Tet. Classes end in the weeks before Tet, don't get restarted for about a month, and yet bills still need paying. Wait for after Feb for job hunting, once all the teachers who will return have returned, their hours set, and the schools start looking to replace those that left and fill up the needed slots with new blood. Right now is not a good time to look for a job. If you do find one, you have to wonder about why during this period of the year the school doesn't have any teachers...

One thing you'll soon learn is that the contracts you sign are "hardly worth the paper they're written on". So breaking the contract will hardly affect you while you're on the plane going home. Getting a contract with a decent school this time of year is extremely difficult!

Your other option is "backpacker schools" which have revolving doors of hiring and teachers quitting. For THESE schools, the time of the year hardly effects them as somebody is always quitting. Of course, this should tell you something about these schools and the salary is 13 - 15 USD per hour.
WARNING these schools have been known to screw you come pay-day!

We Americans don't like to not honor contracts but "when in Rome (VN), be as the Romans" is what I always say.

Good Luck and may your path be made open to you!
