Live in the place you want to live. Teach to the students who will give you the most joy.

If you want some perspective on how quickly money devalues in importance have a look at the Saudi forum. The people making the most money seem to be teaching military folk out in the desert. Most don't seem at all happy with the decision.

It really depends on your goals. If you are hoping to save a little money in the next year so as to depart from China then take the Nanning job. If you want to live in Shanghai and plan to stay in China longer then take the Shanghai job.

Apply at more schools. You may find an excellent salary at an excellent school.

I guess I want to be associated with a school that gets some respect, dumb as that may be.

Fair enough, but have you also thought about how you would survive on such a low pay in Shanghai, that would stress me more than the reputation.

Just take a look at the ad on Dave's for Inner Mongolia http://www.eslcafe.com/joblist/index.cgi?read=7908

Do you know, I'm tempted by that job even though it would be just a bit insane to take it up.

Mind you, I have donkey carts and bad roads here too.

But do you have any yurts, Yaramaz? I think not.

Actually, we do have yurts here in Toronto-by-the-Anatolian-Plateau, monsieur khmer! In Turkish, the word yurt means house, and is usually used in reference to dormitories or student lodgings. If we want to get nit picky, I can also cite the existence of a real yurt, the Stepp'ish Felt kind, in the Ottoman museum in the city centre. Looks real cozy, like.

What is meant by "excellent school"? Could someone define the term please? What I'm saying this is that many schools try to sell themselves as a great school to work for so that they can pay teachers less. I'll be your friend if you work for less, dig? That being said, this is a good selling point for schools. Treat your teachers well and you can save less. It's like that Simpsons episode where Homer has a short turn as an exec and makes the brilliant suggestion to give workers more tartar sauce with their fish sticks to improve productivity. It works! Cost-effective, too. Just yea be wary about those low-paying schools that treat their workers well!
