Teaching at colegios (private schools) is not for everybody, but they do tend to pay better in general than language schools, even some universities. Here is the annual Chilango (magazine) guide to the "best" colegios in Mexico City. For the newbies, if anybody has any comments about any schools listed there, pro or con, it would be helpful. I work at one of the colegios listed there, but I'll keep my comments to myself.

Yeah, Chilango does this annually...good guide to have, for both teachers and parents. Thanks Freddy |

I used that magazine to get my current gig. I'd recommend contacting the schools as there are often last minute openings at this time of year. |

That's usually the best route, yes. For example, one of the schools listed on the Chilango article, the American School Foundation, held their local job fair today. They also attend job fairs in the US and Canada, but the local hires get first crack. |

Best to be on the ground. I can give you the info for a $70 a week hotel in Downtown DF and a "teachers diploma" that is SEP recognized and cost only $500 USD in case you need that as well. |

I found the ASF the toughest nut to crack. They are very pick in who they hire, one must be qualified and experienced and more. And they can afford to be picky, as they'll hire internationally for the person best-fit for the position. I seriously doubt they'd even give someone a second look if all they had was some no-name teacher's diploma that was less than government certification (from a U.S. speaking country) and/or degree in education. A few other schools may be in the same category, such as Westhill, Greengates, Peterson (tho I know they have hired persons with fewer credentials), and a few of the British-modeled schools in or around Santa Fe. Those schools are the exception, however. |

I worked for 2 of the schools that are listed. One paid me $11,000 per month for part-time, 3 days a week and the other paid me over $20,000 pesos per month with vales, about 18,000 after taxes for full-time.
Neither of those schools asked for a degree. |

sure beats those jobs that pay $15 pesos an hour AND ask for a degree, right? I doubt ASF or GG would hire without a degree, at least for the very well-paid positions. Westhill? I can see how that place would turn off everyone to teaching in colegios. |

Did you make the job fair at ASF this month, Freddy? I saw they had about 20 openings ranging across lower, middle, and upper school and through many subjects. |

No, I didn't know about it. But I've tried before with no luck. |
