Dear bugogiboy,

Be seated, please. Typing on a keyboard from an upright position must be rather uncomfortable.

Dear veiledsentiments,

Ah yes - I still have my Molson "Imported from Canada" T-Shirt:

http://www.teesforall.com/Molson_Canadian_Red_Leaf_White_Tee_Shirt-p-6070.html

although one of these might have been an even better choice:

It is all part of the Canadian "plan". As I ask my students - why a ski hill, you guys don't ski. Why ice rinks? You guys don't skate. It is all part of the pernicious encroaching world takeover we are carrying out - slowly slowly.

We are doing the same in the US - all those Canadian senior citizens who winter in the Southern US - our infiltration of the movie and TV industries, etc. etc.

We invite contempt because we will be in charge ---- eventually and when you least expect it.

To get back on topic, I wouldn't take a rejection from HCT as any reflection on your abilities.

I've never applied there myself, but I know quite a few people who have. I've seen some hard-working, well-qualifed native-speaker teachers with excellent experience get rejected for no obvious reason (or at least, no reason that was obvious to me!) On the other hand, I've known of some - to me - fairly unimpressive people who managed to get jobs there. I do think, and I'm not the only one to say this, that HCT are a little 'idiosyncratic' in their hiring practices.

I'm sure HCT would be heartened to know that as a disinterested observer you're following their hiring preferences so avidly.

Puzzled, but heartened.

Having met some of the HCT 'recruitment crew', I can safely say that therein lies the problem. Some of them wouldn't know a Doctorate from a donkey, and it really doesn't matter if they're Emirati or Western. The common denominator is general ignorance and a keen desire to avoid doing the job properly.

So if you get turned down, don't worry. Reapply six months later and, if your application gets screened by a different bod, you'll get a very different response.

Of course, just WHY you should want to be working for HCt is a different matter entirely!

Yes, Citizen Kane and Brownsauce. I agree that HCT seems to be more idiosyncratic than other employers. Maybe it's because they feel they can hire anyone they please since they must get hordes of applications on a daily basis form applicants of all backgrounds and levels of experience (I knew a PhD from the States, a univ department head, who worked at HCT for years as "just" an instructor. This would give some of us less of a chance to get hired.) A possible reason for all the interest in wanting to teach there is from a reputation HCT gained a while back as a "top employer" in the region. That reputation, in turn, has been exploited and heavily promoted by their marketing machine which sends recruiting reps armed with fancy brochures and PP presentations to all English-speaking nations where they spew out the promotional happy-talk about HCT's high stature as an institution and employer. Whether the top billing is deserved, well, it seems that these days it may not, judging from all the negative stories talked about here in this forum. But who knows, really?...there are so many points of view as we have people regardless of where you work. And perhaps the negative remarks about an institution make it to the boards in a much more prolific manner than the positive ones do.

We shall move forward. Thank you all for all the advice and support. Smile

Hmm, how about those 'Mercans in Alaska - you know, the ones that can see Russia from their houses. Aren't they "more northern," you betcha?

Just did a little checking:

"Situated 330 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Barrow, Alaska is the northernmost incorporated city in North America and the largest Inupiat Eskimo community in the world. It is the seat of government for the North Slope Borough, and serves as regional center for the sparsely populated 89,000-square-mile borough - the largest municipality on earth. In land area the North Slope is larger than the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania combined."

Regards,
John

You are correct. I've been there myself. I actually went swimming there once in August. At the time it seemed like a good idea.

Lemme guess? You're hinting that my 'friends' were actually me? Nope. I've never applied to HCT (though may do so at some stage, so I'm not a 'disinterested observer') but I do know that a few people who I considered excellent colleagues were turned down by them at early stages in their lenghty recruitment process.

This is true.HCT love to boast about having the 'best employment package in the Middle East'. Though the package is still pretty decent, the working environment at quite a few of their colleges appears to be rather nightmarish. However, that may not be entirely relevant to this particular thread.

I think its much better to be rejected than to be on their talent pool forever waiting and waiting for an interview!

I don't think that you are actually in their pool until you pass the interview. I know people who waited months and months after passing the interview.

That is not correct---candidates can be put "into the pool" without an interview. Below is a quote from a candiates email from HCT last week---

Quote:
I am pleased to advise that your application for the position ***** has been approved for further consideration by the Screening Team.
Your application will be kept in our talent pool of approved candidates, where it can be accessed by the recruitment and screening team.

The above applicant is in th "talent pool" without an interview.

So... they now have two "pools" Rolling Eyes one pre-interview and one after the interview. Well... I'd rather be in the 2nd, even though even that is no guarantee of employment.

They might have two pools, because I got the same response that I am on their talent pool without any interview.
