To Exit China when still under a teaching contract, can this be done?
I mean, will immigration prevent us from leaving?
I say this just in case any of us end up with rogue, sweat-shop employers |

I'm not a expert on this topic but NO!
What would they do if they did? Force you back and make you work?
Just because you signed a contract? This isn't the military.
Considering Chinese employers break the contract on a regular basis I doubt you should lose sleep over it or feel bad about it.
As far as I know you will only be stopped if you are a serious wanted criminal or something along that area. |

| i think the Chinese authorities have a lot bigger fish to fry than going after every FT who pulls a midnight runner. I've never heard of anyone being detained at the airport and forced at gunpoint to go back and finish their contract. |

| It's a civil matter anyway. Immigration officials would only be interested in matters related to legal status while in China and any criminal activities you may have been part of. Breaking a contract is neither of these. The only comeback your employer has is through the civil courts or withholding contract release documentation etc. |

| How often do FTs pull midnight runners in China? When I was in Korea it would happen from time to time. With the low pay and limited benefits in China I imagine it would happen more often there. |

I don't agree with that. After all, we do have contracts and it just make it that much harder for those of us left behind. I have seen a few midnight runners at private language schools. However, I have never heard of anyone sticking around long enough to actually pay the breach penalty contained in their contract. I guess if someone doesn't return to the same province, he/she should be ok. Unless the living/working conditions are absolutely intolerable, I would advise someone to stick it out. |

You can leave any time you want. The travel agency, airport officials, whoever, won't know WHY you're leaving. You might just be on a break from your job. It's nobody's business where or when or why you go anywhere. Doesn't have to be a midnight runner. Leave in broad daylight. People with contracts in China leave the country all of the time for vacations.
As far as breaking the contract goes, just tell the school you have a family emergency, force majeure, AFTER you've left.

Well, maybe some of these schools will try a little harder to honor their end of the bargain if teachers refuse to tolerate shoddy treatment. EVERY SCHOOL IN CHINA I've been at has broken their contract with me in some shape, form, or fashion. I've been fortunate in that most of the breaches have been minor and easily remedied, but a couple of them were big deals and I've threatened to quit if they weren't fixed. It's worked so far, but others might not lead my charmed (thus far) life. |

Keep dreaming. In my years of experience in China, the result has been just the opposite. And most of the midnight runners I have known have been a bunch of spoiled baby whiners who cannot get used to the fact that Mommy is not around to tuck them in a night. |

Sounds like a huge sweeping statement to me.
Maybe if the entry requirements were a little more strict, with a higher salary to match, fewer cowboy school outfits and more quality candidates would follow. |

Korea may still be number in Midnight Runs now but China will surpass them soon enough. (only a matter of time). |

Umm..I have left China 6 times this year while still under my teaching contract- on holidays! Immigration doesn't know where I'm going, if i'm coming back or not, and they DON'T CARE.
If you have a Z-visa and the subsequent residence permit, you are free to come and go across the border as you please. |
