Thanks y'all, I am really appreciating your comments. I think the thing that is getting to me in this time of decision making is the fact that I will be leaving a lot of much-loved people and places behind, and I must ask myself why, and whether I'm doing it for the right reasons. I think leaving is the right choice, and I am only confused because I haven't entered my Istanbul life yet. It's still a great unknown quantity. I know Kayseri well, its nooks and crannies and people, and I like that feeling. It's rare that I've stayed in one place for so long.
And no, I'm not just another foreigner in a city that can't find teachers, as Ollie suggested. They are having no problem this year finding replacements--- thus the pressure on me to decide NOW. I really like and respect the people in my department and I know they feel the same. The camraderie is excellent. It will be a hard work environment to leave. But, yes, I think I will. I think it will be necessary for me, emotionally and academically. Will definitely try for the MA! I don't want to teach high school English forever...
And FGT, thank you for your well thought out post. I would love to go to Izmir, but just not right now... I can see it, somewhere in my life though...
Does anyone know how I can go about finding a flatshare near Etiler in late September? Levent? Somewhere relatively in that vicinity? Pricey areas but if I share it might be manageable.... |

Hi Yaramaz
I think you may have misread the general tone of my response,so perhaps I should clarify it a bit . I'm quite sure that your soon to be former workmates and employers do NOT undervalue you as a person or as a teacher, if thats is what you thought I implied then perhaps I should have chosen my words more carefully.I do believe that as FGT said you will go to Istanbul and some time in the future you can return a better person/teacher because of that .
You are used to a certain lifestyle /status in your present situation, to your credit you are also aware much of that will change when you get to your new locale, like FGT I'm sorry you won't be trying this part of the country ,generally I think it would be a better compromise, you will be moving from one extreme to the next, but that is the nature of this country I wish you luck in your new adventure and I hope you find a semi human flat mate . |

Thanks Ollie. I agree about Izmir, but it just isn't an option right now. Maybe next year.
Anyone out there need a flatmate come Sept/October? Preferably somewhere near Etiler (but cheaper than Etiler itself)? I smoke like a chimney, drink like a fish, rarely bathe, swear like a sailor, bring back random hairy turkish men (usually carpet sellers and tour guides) to my home and parade around naked most days, and I enjoy eating all the food in the kitchen, regardless of whose it is. I like the variety. I also enjoy refusing to pay my half of the rent. It's a fun hobby. Any takers?
Aye, I've had my share of, um, intriguing flatmates... |

Hey, that sounds like me(except the turkish hairy men, I'll stick to the Turkish hairy women)
Seriously though, you should be happy in your job and your surroundings. You like the job but not the city. You know that you like the 'bul so why not take a gamble and you could enjoy your job aswell as the city |

Yep yep yep.
Sounds good. Beer, kebabs, and hairy Turks all around! Serefe! |
