This question is a little different I think. Apologies if it has been asked before. I DID check.
I have a retirement income that would allow me to live at least at a subsistence level in most any country in the world. So I do not need teaching income to help pay my bills....it would be to either allow for some savings or be able to live in a better lifestyle. If it matters, I am 54 years old.
I mention this because I would think this opens some doors for me that are not usually available if one MUST be able to pay everything based just on a teacher's salary. Most of these posts focus on the ME or Asia for Americans, with an occasional nod to Latin America.
I think I could do any of these, and really might WANT to do LA, but I was wondering if any of you would put yourselves in my shoes with a guaranteed income already? WHich country would you choose then? WOuld it matter?
I was thinking the Ukraine or Russia, maybe somewhere else in Eastern Europe?
BTW, I have posted before and tried to be grateful to those who helped me. I am going to Miami in a couple of weeks to get my CELTA training. I actually owe a debt of gratitude to Dave's ESL for pointing me in the right direction. Thanks to all who helped!
One last mention: I DO have a criminal record that WILL show up if checked. One felony, non violent crime... |

I think no-one can give you exact info on where a felony record will show up, but I think that Central/Eastern European countries generally do require a clean criminal record, and do ask for documents from your home country to state that you have a clean record.
Good on ya for going for the CELTA, and good luck with it! |

What sort of lifestyle are you looking for? For example...is it important to immerse yourself into the local culture, away from other ex-pats, or would you prefer something that has a large ex-pat community to interact with?
I ask that question with Mexico in mind, where you've got big ex-pat communities living in places like Baja California, just outside Guadalajara, San Miguel de Allende among others. Mexico would also offer a number of places where there are far fewer ex-pats around, or where they don't all live in the same place.
Criminal record won't matter here (unless you are currently wanted by the law). |

I don't really know if I can answer that (about living "in the culture among locals vs. with ex pats). I've never really lived in a foreign country, save for in the military, and that hardly qualified...
I will be honest and tell you that one of my big reasons for wanting to teach in Russia or the former Soviet Union is the beautiful Slavic women! I am tired of American women, for a variety of reasons.
My brother lives in a border town in south TX. When I visit him, he won't even consider crossing the border for any reason. Neither will any of his friends, including those who speak Spanish! Yet I know this must not be true of the entire country....
My first reaction is that I'd rather live like the locals do, eschewing Americans to large degree, but I might find that this is not really me after a while...I just don't know right now!

Forgive me for not going back through all your previous posts to check.
You don't need to respond with an answer to the confirmation.
To confirm:
American
male
54 years old
good health
NO - Bachelors degree
WILL have a TESOL certification
positive finding on a CRC.
pension so salary is not a priority?
As an American you can rule out western Europe.
With a positive finding on a CRC you can rule out many parts of Asia and most (if not all) of eastern Europe.
If you do NOT have a Bachelors degree you can rule out many parts of Asia as well.
What you are left with would be most (but not all) of the Americas from Mexico south to Tierra del Fuego, Cambodia, and Laos and possibly parts of the South Pacific and Central Africa.

I do have a degree, though I failed to mention it...

It doesn't matter if you are Bill Gates. Having a secured income does not matter. You still need to satisfy visa requirements to live beyond the permitted duration for a tourist.
Doesn't have to be a work visa, but it does have to be some sort of visa. Immigration won't blink an eye if you say you are willing to live off a pittance because of your other income. You will need a full-time job to get most work visas (I can't say for every country in the world, only Japan). |

YOu could get retirement visas, such as those in Mexico, Thailand, and Malaysia. Monetary requirements vary. Thailand is about 30K for the year, Malaysia is 150K ish, but I believe it's for 10 years, don't quote me, It's the Malaysia My Second Home visa, MM2H |

The Mexico retirement visa (called rentista) doesn't allow you to work. You have to show income from a source outside Mexico totaling something like $1000 usd per month. |

But the OP doesn't need to work. He says, "I have a retirement income that would allow me to live at least at a subsistence level in most any country in the world. So I do not need teaching income to help pay my bills....it would be to either allow for some savings or be able to live in a better lifestyle."
I suppose he could work online though, right? |

I checked in to the Mexico and Thailand programs and I would not qualify based on the criminal record. However, it says nothing about that in Maylasia, at least from a cursory examination. |

Hmm, given the mention of the CELTA and that the OP is writing on an EFL forum about jobs...?

Really? I've never seen anything about a criminal record check for Mexico. |
