...it is 1 of the few places projected to have steady growth, stable economy and agreeable society. I used to read Dave's last year and never ssaw ANY Malaysia posts. Now if you check the cue there are about 10 consecutive malaysia topics. What a turnaround. This must be an indication of general sentiment regarding economic outlook and societal appeal. Im hearing much less about Thailand these few months past, and almost nothing about Vietnam. |

I think it's more to do with a specific government project to train local primary teachers, and the resulting job offers on the Internet sparking some discussion. |

While I agree that most of the recent discussion has centered on the teacher-trainer positions, I also feel that Malaysia is finally getting its due as towards being a desirable location for work.
I regularly peruse other threads and here is a simple summary. There are exceptions, of course, but generally:
Vietnam - Trending worse in the words of regular posters. Most teachers have to look towards the children's market.
Taiwan - Same as Vietnam in that the demand is mostly for teachers of children.
Korea - Can't discuss here, but my understanding is that a lot of TESL/TEFL work is geared towards children.
Indonesia - Recent gov't guidelines make it harder for non-degree holders to get work (maybe). A lot of back-and-forth on this issue.
Malaysia is a nice place in which to live and work. If one of you were to take a teacher-training position, it could lead to something better later on. I have only taught young adults ( ages 18-28 ) in my 15 years here and I would never trade that for some fly-by-night, kiddy training center in any other country. Sometimes the places hardest to get into are worth getting into. |

amen. happy new year. all i need 2 do now is not feel guilty about breaking my contract which i just signed 11-8-10 for 13 months (i know thats a weird duration but its based on the school's curriculum--semester ends 11-30 each year).
honestly kajujati kayujati the latter not the former, i want to do it, at my age there's an urgency to get somehwere i can live in a society i'm happy with, culturally, religiously, spiritually---all of which i am currently unhappy with. (poor sentence for an english teacher, right?)
O god going on 3 years here, ....... coldest winter ever, too.
2 years with the same school, then signed up here 3 mos. ago aand still have 10 mos. remaining on contract. I will therefore miss both Malaysian hiring seasons---1 in Summer, 1 in October I think I read. By that time they will hire all 13,933 english teachers and I will be shut the ^%$# out of the market. great..... if i give 2 mos. notice in writing i can break the contract it says......hmmmm........need a good excuse to tell the principal....... hope i can get out of here in time for Summer hiring. |

Well, they are not going to hire 13,933 new teachers any time soon, but it is a target of sorts. There will still be opportunities come next year. BTW, the public schools here run on a calendar that puts the NEW school year starting in January, not August. College and universities run on calendars that begin new school terms in August, but not gov't high schools. |
