From reading all of the posts, it sounds like every 3rd women in some places are pros....how pervasive is the prostitution where you are?
Have you been mobbed by pros? Do you know if any of your students are one? Have you as a guy or girl, been asked to become one?
I hope I don't offend, but I read alot about this and wonder if any of it is true. Your real-life experiences would be helpful in knowing. |

I suppose if you go looking for prostitutes you'll find them everywhere. I've never tried using their services myself; prostitution strikes me as being a little too close to slavery.
As for being asked to become one, I find that mildly amusing: I'm far too old, fat, and ugly to make an appealing prostitute. |

Every 3rd woman a prostitute? No way! Prostitution certainly does exist in Asia and is definitely more visible than in most of the Western world, but it isn't like you are going to find a woman selling her body at every corner store or anything like that.

Not really. However, it happens occasionally in Asia. I have been solicited in three places in Asia: many times in Bangkok on Sukhumvit Road, once in what I thought was a legit massage parlor in Yangshuo, and, oddly enough, once in Hong Kong along Nathan Road. Basically, it is out there, but unless you go out looking for the "pros", they aren't going to bother you.

I taught in a middle school/high school in China, so I certainly hope not!

lol...as a guy, no, I haven't. I hope you weren't counting on selling your body as a side job

Well, some of it is true and some of it is not. I don't think it is any secret that there are some destinations in Asia famous (or should that read infamous?) for the prostitution scene there, like Pattaya, Bangkok, etc. However, it isn't like you are going to see people selling themselves on a daily basis if you live in Asia, unless, of course, you go looking for it (probably not unlike any other region of the world).
Cheers,

This is the wrong place to enquirer tips and odds about hookers in Asia.
There are specialized websites for that you know.
Students and all kinds of foreigners are reading your posts
Sounds that hookers is your forte, try Thailand or India... |
I think the guy just wanted to know whether he would be attacked by prostitutes if he decided to visit or teach in Asia. I don't think it is fair to assume that the guy is looking for action in Asia...in fact, by the tone of his post, I believe he is looking to completely avoid this scene in Asia! It isn't as if he was asking us for great places to go to meet hookers or anything like that. Anyway, this is the general discussion forum, and as long as people keep their posts clean and tasteful, they should be able to post/ask anything they want.
Cheers,
Kirk |

Come on, James, this guy does want to be assaulted by pros, so he can lower the price he is willing to pay!
He may be too shy to approach the ladies of the night! |

I live in Bangkok. Most of the hookers here are imports from Isan (Thailand's rural breadbasket), Vietnam or Burma. If you're in a part of town where farang (the Thai word for foreigner, a slightly respectful term, actually) have money to spend there's a taxi driver with a little girlie brochure.
In Isan, a whole family makes about one or two US dollars a day. In about fifteen minutes a pretty girl with no education can make twenty times that in Bangkok. And possibly find a (almost always German or Austrailian) man to send her money each month to keep her chaste (which they never do, because, afterall, they want two "boyfriends" not just one) and not work at all.
Most Thai and farang men use these girl's services from time to time. In Bangkok it's too expensive to do all the time.
It's pervasive, but if you want to avoid it it's easy to do that as well. And all the hardcore sexpats have moved over to Cambodia now (where you get what you get in Thailand but for about 1/3 or 1/4th the price), anyway. |

Thanx for the replies. I'm just curious after seeing all of the media attention and reading posts about Asia. Since you all are over there and have the actual ground view of it, I wanted your opinion.
For me, prostitution is wrong. It is slavery. Only the young and innocent are sought out and victimized (tourtured) .
I'm not shy, would I post this if I was?
I don't need to solicit pros when I look so damn good I was just....curious. Not a bad thing to be.
One other question.....what is a troll??? |

Dear blackguy-n-Asia,

Well, it could be 1. a dwarf or giant in Scandinavian folklore inhabiting caves or hills; 2. a lure or a line with its lure and hook used in trolling; or, as in the context I believe you're referring to, 3. a "false" message, posted on a message board, that's deliberately designed to provoke responses. This meaning comes from meaning 2, listed above. The "troll message", like a barbed hook and lure, is meant to "catch" unwary and/or naive readers and inspire them to respond, often with indignation, surprise, etc. So, what Mr. Jones is suggesting is that your posting of Arpril 30th was that sort of message. I'm not so sure, myself. I think it may well have been genuine. But if it wasn't, then your question about trolls was also a troll.
Regards,
John
P.S. Here's a web site that further explains the word:

An angry little red-faced creature, hopping up and down underneath a bridge, clamoring for attention from the passersby far above his head.
I think I can empathize with him! |

Prostitution in Asia could be seen in an entirely different light. For example, getting paid to be a dancing monkey for the kids. *shudders at the memory*.
Wh-ore no more,

P.S. Tongue in cheek for anyone who would care to take exception. |

I agree with this, in fact most of those in brothels are there because of poverty and prostitution is a so-called way out.
