Am I crazy?? On Tuesday I will be moving to KL and giving up a really good job in China to do so...

In China I work at a university and teach 18 hours plus 5 admin hours a week (21 hours) and I make 12800 NET a month.. I get 1 month paid in full holiday for Chinese new year and 2 months 1/2 paid in summer. The job allows me to live like a king ... go out every weekend .. buy clothes and have a good life... I was also meant to be starting IELTS examiner training for which I could earn RMB 3000 1 weekend which means potentially I could make around 18000 or more depending on how much/hard I want to work. However, my job does not satisfy me and I feel like I am becoming a shit teacher.. it annoys me that my colleagues are not teachers and that they just have a white face and degree which enables them to teach.. also, my university has many Filipino teachers who constant make mistakes and how walk around thinking they are gods gift... Another reason is that from next semester I will have to teach Business English and I don't like Business English and I took the job stating I just wanted to teach EAP .

I like China but it's starting to grate on me.. I want to settle in Asia but maybe this is not the place to advance my career and I really don't want to teach business English!

So, I applied for a job in Malaysia with a language school which pays RM5800 and I hear that it's a good salary for this type of gig and it works out around the same as I am on in China and I've heard KL is cheaper than Beijing! Problem is I worked in a Language school in Italy and promised I'd never work in one again but to be honest I can't see a uni in china being any better.. I think maybe a language school in KL might prepare me better and give me better experiences for the future like if I were to apply to the British Council. problem is , I will be teaching 25 hours a week and 5 hours admin (so that's 30 hours) and my holiday entitlement goes from 3 months to 1 month. This is the only negative I can see,

So, Am I crazy to give up my job in China with few hours and long holidays for the one in KL? Or should I just bare teaching Business for the sake of a short week and long holidays or is moving to KL good in terms of career advancement?

Thanks

Making mistakes, are they?

Two thoughts:

-What is wrong with teaching business English?

-I doubt that teaching in a language school in Malaysia would be any better in terms of career advancement or job satisfaction than a university in China. Less so, most likely. If it were me, I'd make hay while the sun shines, in terms of saving up some money.

If you're hacked off with the job in China then you're probably doing the right thing. You can always go back to China later ... or move on somewhere else (that's the beauty of TEFL).

I can understand your desire to leave China. fascinating place, but very challenging and not somewhere many people would find it easy to settle.

I don't think your salary will go anywhere near as far in Malaysia as it does in China.

Give Malaysia a go for a month or two, if it's rubbish then move on.

I don't think you're crazy.

I think you're adventurous.

So, just enjoy your adventure.

Good luck.
