You have a Japanese wife, but do you have a spouse visa for Japan? I suspect not, and until you get one, you will be treated like any other American newcomer with your credentials.

JET programme, by the way, hires once a year, and the deadline for the coming year is long gone. So, getting on JET by June is impossible.

CELTA or any other cert is not usually needed in Japan, but it won't hurt to get one just because of the flooded market here.

I'm graduating in May with an MA in Linguistics with an applied specialization, and I need to find a job that pays decently. How can I best put my MA to use? I've been teaching ESL at a local language school in L.A. since 2008, and my wife is a Japanese citizen. Furthermore, I've studied two years of Japanese at SDSU. Although I don't have a CELTA or TESOL credential, I started out as a TESOL major at Cal State, and I finished most of the coursework for the TESOL MS before switching to pure linguistics.
The MA will not serve you well in university jobs unless you have publications and (usually) some teaching experience here and some Japanese language ability (What's your JLPT level?).

I hate to say this but you may only be qualified for entry level work here. Good news is that this is prime hiring season.

I have to disagree about not needing a CELTA if you have a related MA.

I have an MA TESOL and cTEFL (not quite a CELTA) and the MA was academic whereas the cTEFL was practical. I have about 6 years' ESL experience, would resent having to do a CELTA, but I can see some logic in the requirement. Some MAs feature an observed teaching component, but this may not be apparent to an employer's first glance.

I've met some teachers who have been winging it in the classroom for years, get an MA, then go back to not really knowing how to manage their classes/lessons properly.
