Hello all,

I am a 48 year old UK citizen (native speaker) with degree (in law) and CELTA certification which I gained last Autumn. I dont have any teaching
experience.

I have been applying for jobs in Indonesia and Vietnam for the last 3 months and got absolutely nowhere.

I'm now planning on coming out to job hunt in person, but before I buy that ticket, I would appreciate any help you guys could provide with the
following questions:

1. Are plenty of schools hiring at the moment? What is the best time of year to come?

2. Is the market flooded out with economic refugees from the West?

3. Does the new requirement for teachers to have first degrees in English make it more difficult for people who arrive on spec?

4. Is my age likely to be against me in finding a teaching position in Indonesia?

I know some of these issues have been discussed on the forum but it is hard to get a clear picture of what things are like from the UK.

Some opinions from what I know now...and I may not know that much..Smile

Tough to say....but if there are a lot of jobs ads out now then schools will be hiring in the next month or two. English schools hire year round, to my knowledge there is no peak hiring month...

2. Is the market flooded out with economic refugees from the West?

Maybe, not too sure on this

3. Does the new requirement for teachers to have first degrees in English make it more difficult for people who arrive on spec?

Some of the schools are either taking the new English Degree Law seriously or the people in charge are not letting them "work around it." Other schools have been in some cases able to work around it but the visa takes longer and is more expensive cuz of the higher price of bribes.

4. Is my age likely to be against me in finding a teaching position in Indonesia?

The honest truth in my opinion is that when an employer is has a choice between a younger Celta qualifed teacher with no experience and an older Celta qualifed teacher with no experience he/she will choose the younger 95% of the time.

Hope this helps
