People have achieved far more with far less in the course of human history.

You still have not answered my questions.

Why is using the board a no-no?
Why don't you have supplementary materials?

I could ask more, like have you asked to get the photocopy room key? Can you use recycled paper (my first job did!) for your class note paper or supplementary materials?

Of course, another more important question came to mind a long time ago:
Why did you even accept this job? But I will leave that only as a rhetorical.

The board?-It isn't very big?
The materials? All for much higher levels.
Accepted the job because of the 70k salary (net) and 19 weeks paid holiday and BUPA health cover...oh and the accommodation and food.

Like I said.....this is not my usual class....it's a one-off.

The local teachers, who speak Arabic are doing their best to avoid teaching, so that poh-poohed the assistant idea....I'd already suggested it.

I console myself by reminding myself that this class won't be for ever.

Why put a question mark after your answer? You know or don't know whether it's big enough. What are the dimensions?

So, it sounds like they do have materials. Is that right? Your earlier post suggested that there weren't any at all. As for "much higher levels", do what we all do and dumb them down (simplify them) or make your own.

Did you know this class would be something you'd face? If so, you can't blame the school 100%.

Dear sharter,

Good grief, man - where are your manners? Cover your mouth, please.

Regards,
John

I think to be fair to Sharter there is a point where no matter how many tefl techniques you learnt over the years you get an impossible situation like this. Of course these students shouldnt be having a native teacher ( unless they are fluent in arabic and can do translation ). Forget Krashen and all that shoite as its been proved wrong. Students need a grounding in the basic structures before a native teacher goes near them. Usually its purely down to the greed of the language school owner who simply doesnt care.
Where on earth do you earn 70k net ? Confused

He's on an oil rig platform and the chalkboard is one of those 6x6 inch handheld ones we used to take on car trips when I was very small Cool

Give the guy a break.

Yep Sis I agree with you. Luckily I get 3 weeks off every 6 and that keeps me sane.

Anyone who taught security guards/firemen at QP will have come across such students. They can't add up and don't know where Paris is.

Despite being devout Muslims, they rarely even get stuff from the book right...you know which book I mean.

In the Middle East Baldrick would be a genious.
